I bought it to check the sugar content of my homemade sorbet (makes a big difference in the final texture) and it works great! Very easy to use as well.

Brix calculation
Just for the people who experiments with food and want accuracy I have an explanation just in case you need it.The definition is: One degree Brix is 1 gram of sucrose in 100 grams of solution.I experimented adding 20 grams of sugar into 100 grams of water and then tested the solution. I was mistakenly expecting a reading of 20 brix, so I was confused to see the actual reading which was 16.6 brix.I spent an hour thinking that maybe the device was not calibrated or there was problem with my sugar or water. Then I realized that the actual calculation should have been "sugar / (water + sugar)", so it was 20/(100+20) = 16.6%I tried with other amounts and the calculations seems to be the ok.Hope this is useful to anyone.

Nice Instrument, No Hard Case Though...
While it did not come with the hard case as advertised, the refractometer did come with all of the other components as advertised. Instead, it came with a soft case that does fit all of the additional components nicely. It would appear that the instructions were originally written in another language and then translated into English, making them a little hard to figure out at first. While I did not get the chance to test the unit out with a known standard yet, I was able to easily calibrate it with distilled water using the screw at the top of the instrument.I look forward to being able to use this on an upcoming batch of wine must.
