Dark Film Mysteries III Film Noir Collector's Set [3-Disc Collector's Set]

Good B movies.
This 3rd entry of Dark Film Mysteries film noir collector's set is a bit of a let down-compared to their first 2 editions. But if you don't compare it, the movies are good to watch. But you won't see any Edward G. Robinson or Edmund Obrien. I haven't watched all the movies yet, but they are entertaining and do have their own value. "Lady Gangster" was a good story. Amazing it could tell a whole complete story in 61 minutes! "Inner Circle" was a pleasant surprise. "Gambler's Choice" was just a remake of "Manhattan Melodrama"-1934, or "San Francisco" 1936. Same story. But nice to see Chester Morris. I guess so far, I liked "Whistle Stop" the best. George Raft is his cool self and Ava Gardner is beautiful and beguiling. "A Life at Stake" may be the best one, but I have seen that one before. Angela Lansbury is young, beautiful, and bewitching. Keith Andes is gorgeous in his own way. It's an intriguing film. In "Great Guy" James Cagney's acting is first rate. No matter what film he is in, his acting is exceptional. "The Great Flamarion" and "Dark Mountain" are both interesting stories. "Dark Mountain" has some good acting: the comic relief of Eddie Quillan, a heroic canine, and Regis Toomey played a convincing gangster. Robert Lowrey played the 'noble prince charming and Ellen Drew the beautiful damsel in distress'. There were some fine character actors too. Overall, I'd say if you like classic films and film noir, you'll find this selection worth it. How can you go wrong at $1 a movie?

3.5 Stars, Some Good and....
Some bad. "Jailbait" was just ridiculous, like watching a bad school play.Quite a few were pretty good although there is no restoration here, very gritty picture especially in the night scenes. Sound is a bit up and down but not too bad.For around $10 this is worth it.

Another great collection of Noir films!!
We were so pleased to see the recent release of Dark Film Mysteries III Film Noir Collector's Set. We already own Dark Film Mysteries collections I & II and we just loved the variety of great old Hollywood noir films. This new collection does not disappoint with it's titles such as "Lady Gangster" with Faye Emerson and a young Jackie Gleason playing a hardened criminal. Also it was great to see Erich Von Stroheim in "The Great Flamarion", as we had only previously seen him in one other film, "Sunset Boulevard". We are still making our way through the set and we are looking forward to watching some more "gems" in this collection!! A+

The Mysteries Return
This is the third volume of mysteries released on DVD. This is a mixed bag of film noir movies. Some are more suited in the gangster and period drama's genre. But all hold your attention."A Life At Stake" made in 1955 stars Angela Lansbury from "Murder She Wrote" TV series as a woman who with her husband plan to use an insurance salesman in a scam. This is film noir at it's best."Whistle Stop" made in 1946 stars George Raft and Ava Gardner in a movie where two of her old boyfriends get framed for murder. Another film noir classic.George Raft who was well known for acting in gangster movies in real life had connections with the mob.The next movie is a real oddity. "Jail-Bait" made in 1954 about a plastic surgeon who is forced to change the face of a villain or risk being blackmailed. This was directed by Ed Wood one of the worst director's of all time. Most famous for the worst movie ever made "Plan 9 From Outer Space" where an alien arrives on earth. The creature is really a man under a rug crawling around. At one stage you even see his hand come out from under said rug. "Glen Or Glenda?" was another Ed Wood movie about a man transforming into a woman. This was made in 1953.( I did not know this was going on way back then. I thought this was a new fad going around today.) "Jail-Bait" is not as bad as those but it's not good either. Plus it has an annoying guitar playing in the background all through the movie. There is one scene in the movie where there is a vaudeville act performing in blackface. It has no connection to the movie. It was just thrown in to pad out the running time of the movie. The makers of this DVD address the fact that as a film preservation and restoration company they thought it was only fair to keep this scene in and not edit it. I agree. I hate any kind of editing to a movie. Let the viewer decide whether to watch it or not. Anyways, the movie goes to show that a good director or fairly decent one usually can create a lot with very little. Ed Wood was the exception. He created even less with very little. There is bonus material at the end of the disc with the trailer to "Jail-Bait". it's about a minute long and is better than the whole movie.James Cagney is up next in "Great Guy" made in 1933. This is more a racketeer movie with Cagney playing a weights and measures public servant working for the city of New York."Shoot To Kill" made in 1947 follows the story of a corrupt DA framing a gangster for a crime he didn't commit. This was quite an entertaining low budget movie."The Limping Man" made in 1953 was a British movie with Lloyd Bridges of "Sea Hunt" TV fame starring as a man getting caught up in a spy ring. Picture quality is not so good here. This is more suited in the spy genre kind of movie."The Hoodlum" made in 1951 is a great low budget movie starring Lawrence Tierney as said hoodlum planning the perfect armoured car heist after just being released from prison. In real life Lawrence Tierney's lived out his life like the characters in his movies. He was jailed numerous times in the 40's and 50's for bar room brawls, being drunk and disorderly, attacking a cop and kicking in a woman's door and beating up her boyfriend on the same night as his mother died. One of his last films was Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs". A man you would not want to meet in a dark alley or even a well lit one."The Black Book" made in 1949 is a period drama set during the French Revolution starring Robert Cummings and Richard Basehart.. Basehart plays the nation's dictator and the black book is a book with a list of names marked for the guillotine. Very atmospheric."The Great Flamarion made in 1945 stars Erich Von Stroheim and Dan Duryea. Duryea usually the villain of many movies is here the victim of a crack shot showman deceived in committing a murder. An interesting choice to these set of films."The Inner Circle" made in 1946 is a low budget movie with William Frawley better known as Fred Mertz in the classic "I Love Lucy" comedy TV series, plays a Lieutenant of police investigating the murder of a notorious gossip columnist."Dark Mountain" made in 1944 is about a woman who marries a man not knowing he is a mobster. A former flame comes to her rescue. Pretty good low-budget movie."Lady Gangster" made in 1942 stars three people who would go onto more famous things. Frank Wilcox would become Mr Brewster on the brilliant "The Beverly Hillbillies" TV show. William Hopper would go on to play private investigator Paul Drake in the iconic "Perry Mason" TV series and Jackie Gleason would become one of the great comedians of his day in "The Honeymooners" TV show. He would later play Minnesota Fats in the Paul Newman movie "The Hustler" and a police chief trying to catch Burt Reynolds in "Smokey and the Bandit". Here, "Lady Gangster" tells the tale of a woman getting involved with mobsters. Another low-budget hardly seen movie. Finally, we have "Gambler's Choice" made in 1944 about three childhood friends who meet again years later. The girl has become a singer. One boy becomes a cop while the other becomes a gambler. So quite a mixed bag of movies. Most never seen in years. So I am glad to have had the opportunity to view them.
