I can't think of any singer in the mid 60's that could tackle a project like this. But tackle it he did

Ok....Ready Boys and Girls? I am ready to give my review of The Purple Album by Whitesnake. To prepare for this review I set of a playlist in my iPod, pairing all the original songs from Deep Purple with the new stuff. I listen to Deep Purple first, then each track of Whitesnake CD as it followed its Purple counterpart.A little history for those not familiar with this project. from 74-76, David Coverdale was the lead singer of Deep Purple, a duty he shared with Glenn Hughes....but lets face it.....Coverdale's voice made that era what it became. Later he would move on to form Whitesnake. I became aware of David when I watched a broadcast of The California Jam in 1974, just as he belted ...and I mean belted out MISTREATED. So...we are talking about 15 tracks......originally performed some 40 years ago, by a master vocalist...who in my opinion as far as the USA is concerned, never got the recognition he deserved. Truly...I can't think of any singer in the mid 60's that could tackle a project like this. But tackle it he did.David Coverdale...in The Purple Album.....is surrounded by top notch musicians that bring a new intensity to songs that were already legendary and took them to a new place in the present. David doesn't just rehash the classics.....he reinvents their sound, While his version in Deep Purple were bluesier and funky...the Whitesnake version are a mixture of explosive treats for the ear to beautiful acoustic versions like Sail Away. For me, I got my wish as I have always wondered how David would sound singing Holy Man, originally sung by Glenn Highes. In a word...majestic with a great arrangement. We hear different instumentations though all the while the basic integrity of the songs remains intact. So in the end...what you have is a well thought out, perfectly executed homage to a period of Deep Purple's legacy, by the very man who helped create that legacy. David does a truly magnificent job paying his respect to the iconic band that helped start his musical journey.I could not be more pleased with the tracks that David chose to do in this project, the deluxe set features two of my favorite song from Come taste The Band. What is further exciting and a sad fact at the same time.....it has taken 40 years to hear most of these songs. None of the Deep Purple versions that followed these 3 amazing albums ever performed these songs live in concert, except David when starting Whitesnake...he would reach back and do Mistreated...and Might Just Take Your Life. That being said...it is a gift to have David...again in his 60's....take charge of this project and see it through. Amazing effort by an amazing man who is a a vocalist beyond compare.Thank you David.Shakkar

Reinterpreted classic Purple songs done right.

Ah Whitesnake, one of my fave bands. I was a bit taken aback when the announcement of this new album hit the presses. I had mix feelings of the usual band rehash of their old songs. But as a fan and David Coverdale (DC) and his hired guns, I knew I was going to preorder and buy it. I generally buy newly released CDs locally in stores because I like having the album in had the day of release. But I decided to try preorder via my Amazon prime account. And I was pleasantly surprised my album to arrive a day early! Thanks Amazon. Now on to the WS Purple Album...I give it 4.25 Stars and a fist pump in the air. ✊🏼😝 I thoroughly enjoyed WS last two albums. They had a very modern sound, DC and crew where all on fire. With this release, I think he continued that momentum with a homage to his Deep Purple career. I like just about all songs, I think DC tried to reinterpret his songs in a modern WS style and he pulled it off, most these songs sound pretty different than just a straight copy. Although a few songs could have used a lil more differentiating variety. The song Sail Away, in my opinion is the perfect representation of what Mr. Coverdale wanted to accomplish with this record. An new take on classics we all know and love so much. I recommend this CD to all, just remember these are a new take on previous songs, let go of preconceived notions and enjoy these as a stand alone "Purple Album". Hope to see WS sometime soon.

    Highly Enjoyable

I am not a big Purple fan personally. I am also not big on Glenn Hughes. I see the appeal of these artists but they just don't speak to me. ...But I am a big Whitesnake fan. That being said I am not coming at this after hearing the original albums, living with them and loving them for the last 20-30 years.... I feel that is important to point out as I am certain if I was I may not like this as much as I do if I were coming from that place. All of that being explained I am really enjoying this album. DC sounds great as does the band - the guitars in particular sound great and there is very little of the DP trademark Hammond organ (which is a good thing as far as my taste goes) ... Joel Hoekstra does not sound like Doug Aldrich or John Sykes or Ritchie Blackmore so we shall see how they do when it comes time to put out some original material but he doeds very well here. This is a great diversion for us Whitesnake fans but, again, can't predict how long time DP fans would take to this (as a comparative - I love Twisted Sister but did not respond well when they re-recorded Stay Hungry and released as Still Hungry BUT at least there you got some additional songs that they had never recorded and released officially....)
