A comprehensive and well-written history
First off, let me say that despite it's paperback format, this is a more comprehensive history of the Volkswagen Type 2 "Transporter" & all its variants than a similar hard back I own. This book covers developments up to 2006, altho' for obvious reasons there isn't much to say post-'89, as VW finally transitioned to a front-wheel-drive water-cooled minivan a la' Chrysler & others & lost all the fine points of the original transporter: it is only due to continued production of the original design in Brazil & Mexico that the story continues up to the date of publication... but it is a testament to the timelessness of the original and the thoroughness of this book that it covers developments past the turn of the millenium! This book is lavishly illustrated, and covers the myriad camper variants in considerable detail. It was clearly written [or at least edited & published] in the UK, so it covers some camper conversions that are otherwise unheard of stateside, since the type II was such a popular subject for such aftermarket conversions that would have been listed as motorhome manufacturers, & built on a much larger, heavier & inefficient truck chassis here in the USA.To give you an idea of how extensive the illustration is, there are probably fewer than a dozen pages out of the 200+ that consist solely of text, with no photos on the page! The only serious complaint I can level at it is that it can sometimes be difficult to pick out the rather limited amount of text on some of the pages that have more captioning for the photos on them than the content of the core text!Basically, this is a coffee-table book shrunk down to 1/3-scale and wrapped in a paperback binding: if you have a love for or an abiding curiosity about the old VW Type II, then you cannot go far wrong with this book. While it doesn't possess any of the technical trivia that serious rebuilders/renovators may be trying to discover, for the casual fan or owner who doesn't need such minutia in order to perform a pristine renovation, it is a wonderful book. I enjoyed reading it & perusing the photos which covered the evolution of the design across the first 3 generations in fairly exacting detail quite nicely, as well as cursory coverage of the last 2 generations [where the design didn't really change much from time of release anyway.]I recommend it.
