A TOUCHING, DISTURBING HOMAGE TO THE 1960s
Edgar Wright's LAST NIGHT IN SOHO works on a number of levels: ghost story, horror pastiche, affecting love story, twisty homage to 1960s London. The 4K disc bests the accompanying 'standard' bluray; here, the more powerful image tech properly delineates the 'past' from the present in a visual way that the bluray can't manage: the 1960s sequences have a palpable diffentiation visually [ and therefore tonally] from the present-day sequences - the extra resolution of the 4K disc reveals the subtle difference between what is imagined [ remembered?] and what is 'real': the bluray can't depict this due to the limited bandwidth of the format.Performances are excellent - EVEN Terence Stamp [ who I usually can't abide] gives a powerful performance here, but the standouts are the two girls, the leads, who are bewitching, charming and, well. . .Did I mention the wonderful Bond homage [ to 'THUNDERBALL' ] ? My favourite sequence in the entire movie! An unsettling use of period music, outstanding cinematography, first-rate art direction and animation - and an eerie, spine-tingling atmospheric end credits sequence shot during lockdown 2020 on the deserted night streets of Soho makes this my favourite movie of 2021.Creepy, perverse and disturbing - bravo, Edgar!

“Downtown” London from the 60’s to the 2020’s !
Just got the DVD after having seen the film twice in the cinema. I am sad that this film did not get the wide showing in U.K.cinemas it deserved .I am certain this film will be seen as a classic in the future when it gets a wider audience.Special shoutouts to Thomasin McKenzie who is in almost every scene and was just 18 years old when it was filmed and what a new talent she is ! Great to see Anya Taylor-Joy too who is a rising American star (loved her in the Queen’s Gambit” ). I was impressed by her excellent vocal and very different take on Petula Clark’s classic Downtown ,as well as hearing snatches of Petula’s original and drumbeat version .With much of the film based in the 1960’s it was a joy to hear a lot of 60’s classics played to create the unique atmosphere of that special time .This was made extra special by wonderful performances too from the legendary Diana Rigg sadly in her last role, Rita Tushingham, and Terence Stamp. Also good support from Matt Smith and Michael Ajao. Excellent story and direction by Edgar Wright who was new to me so I will be definitely be catching up on his work! Thanks to all who were involved.in this very entertaining film

Anna Taylor is a joy in this dark sixties acid trip of a film
Joy plays Eloise a budding fashion design student who moves to London. She doesn't get on with the other students in the halls of residence so moves into an old sixties house with an elderly landlady. However, when she goes to sleep in her room she starts to hallucinate or imagine a previous tenant's life called Sandy who came to London in the sixties to fulfil her musical dreams which ended up going horribly wrong. Great supporting cast and nice plot twists at the end. Recommended.
