Routines for Reasoning: Fostering the Mathematical Practices in All Students

Practical and Useful! A must-have for every math teacher's professional library.
I LOVE this book! Several of us just finished reading this in a book study. The authors lay out a framework for the all important CCSS-MP that highlight forms of reasoning and provide a succinct and cogent rationale for using instructional routines in the classroom. They introduce four routines: Capturing Quantities (MP2), Connecting Representations (MP7), Recognizing Repetition (MP8), and Three Reads (MP1). For each, they unpack the routine, describe how to use it, and give sample tasks and discussion. My favorite part is their explanation of how each routine supports students with disabilities and English language learners. The routines are usable with any curriculum materials and any appropriate task. This work stems from Magdalene Lampert's work on instructional routines and is appropriate for all grade levels 2-12. With adaptation, most of the routines are suitable in K-1 as well. I dream of the day these routines are a routine part of every math class. As an instructional coach, I usually gift my teachers a book a year. Routines for Reasoning is my book of the year.

Great information, but maybe sexist?
The book is very well written; using language and terms that most of the population can understand. Its not wordy and gets to the point of instruction. My only concern so far(I'm half way through) is that it seems to be sexist. In the scenarios, the male teachers are written in such a way to where they are not as efficient in their instruction as the female teachers. I get the same impression when it comes to how the students were written. The female students seem to have better critical thinking skills than the males.

Seriously Awesome Resource
I bought this one and decided to start a book club around it... It is well-worth the money, and the routines laid out are simple but profound. The vignettes are a help themselves, but this book also has so many resources--not just given, but also structured, so that you will be able to create your own in the end. I am so excited to implement in my classroom.

Effective strategies for educators.
We worked with teachers who use this book for professional development. The book contains strategies for dealing with how students think.

Well worth the purchase and implementation!
This book is detailed with clear and well written examples of reasoning routines, their connection to the mathematical practices, and recommendations/suggestions for implementation. It is well worth the purchase and, more importantly, the implementation, especially the chapter on the 3-Reads. Take your time in reading through it and digesting what applies to you and your students. Be open to trying the routines the authors present and to connecting them with your students and learning environment.

This is a great resource that is full of great strategies in a very accessible way. It is easy to pick up and use even if you don't have time to read it cover to cover. There are some very useful charts that I can see been used effectively to support teachers or paraprofessionals in implementing the routines. A great investment.

Wish I had this book sooner!
This book beautifully explains how the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice can be thought about and used for problem solving. It's definitely the best math book I have bought in quite a while.
