These are amazingly durable reels
I purchased my first pair of these 8 years ago at a local tackle shop. I fish 40+ days a year, so I figured a year or two on the bay would destroy it, but at $15 a piece they were disposable. I now have seven of them and the originals are still doing fine. I have a number of expensive reels from Penn and Shimano, but these 4000R's are my favorite. At the end of a day of fishing, I just run fresh water over the whole reel and change the line every couple of years - that's it for maintenance.I pair the reels with Ugly Stik's and Stren's 12lb Hi-Vis green mono. Hi-Vis is a huge help keeping lines from crossing, especially when I have others out fishing with me. I found that once I had a couple of these on the boat, I preferred to have all rods with rear drag controls so no matter what rod you grab, you don't have to search for the drag dial. I don't understand why every spinning reel isn't made with a rear drag control, it's a much more natural motion.

Not comparable to an FX 100
I bought this reel because my fx100r is getting loose. The fx100r is small and a very well made version of this reel made back in the 90's.I ordered this thinking it was close in size and I could replace my old favorite. Not the case. It's a good reel for under 20$ no doubt but these quick fire designs aren't what they use to be.This will get the job done but you can tell the quality has dropped. The seller is 5 stars .I got the reel in quickly and on time.

Simply the best reel design and durability for <$20
These reels are the best! 1st: the cost < $20; 2nd: the drag system-its located on the rear of the reel, no interference w/your hands and the line that you have w/all front drag systems, easy adjust and smooth! 3rd: Durability- I have 4 different sizes of this reel ranging from the micro ultralight the 1000, and the 2000 size, and the heavy duty 4000 series! I have had these reels for 15-16 years w/o so much as a hiccup! The company has changed their model #'s I think, but it's the same fantastic performing reels like this one! They also have the "quick-draw" single finger trigger casting system... you can quickly cast using only one arm. You can waste your money on "....bearings" or "..super metal construction " but I've had those...I've spent a boatload of money on those reels, but the ones that perform day in and day out cost < $20 are right in front of you!! I recieve nothing from Shimano, nothing from Amazon. I have no ulterior motives. I'm simply a retired guy who can buy expensive reels if I wanted. This purchase is going on a $500+ custom rod built for my friend. Waste your money or don't; these "cheap" reels are better designed, and have outlasted other Shimono reels....period.

Excellent reel at a great price
This is an excellent reel. I’ve had these reels for over 20 years, and have used them regularly every summer. They are durable, smooth, and perform very well. I prefer the rear drag. When fighting a fish, I don’t want to be putting my fingers in front of the reel. You can pay a great deal more for a reel, but let’s face it, you don’t need to spend big bucks to catch a fish. I would rather put a few more dollars in a rod and lures. I recommend this without reservation.

Best in its price class by far.
There is NOTHING on the market to compare to this reel. I paid $12 for mine and it outclasses reels costing 4 times as much. It is basic but well designed. The fit and finish are very good. It is smooth and casts well. I know Shimano makes durable reels. If you compare it to any other reel in its price class it is light years ahead. I paired mine with the appropriate sized rod and use it for trout and pan fish. It replaced a Shakespear of the same size. The Shimano is much lighter while feeling more solid. You will not be disappointed in the price to value ratio.

Great for Most Average Sized Fish
Works great for your average sized freshwater fish. It's caught everything from the smallest pan fish to bass no problem. It is paired with a ultralight Berkeley cherrywood now, but it worked great on a Shimano stimula rod as well. I have the 4000 series in this reel too and used it on the Outer Banks and it has held up better than the saltwater tackle that I used.

Very smooth
So far the reel has performed as I expected. Thisnis the third shimano reel I have purchased. The first one is about 30 years old and needs a new bail spring which I can not find. I dont want to get rid of it because it holds some serious sentimental value. My second is about 12 years old and is a quickfire like this one. It is currently my favorite. I bought this for my son and then loaded it up with some very light line for trout fishing. I know it will work well for bass too

My favorite reel overall for versatility, reliability and light weight.
Well earned 5 stars for this quality reel. Dont be deceived the cheap price, this reel has lots to offer and i hope shimano continues to offer this reel even at a higher price. In terms of reliability, my originals are still going strong. Sure, i have purchased other reels that are far more expensive and cleverly market their claims, but honestly, this is my all around favorite. In particular is what i call the trigger cast system. This feature negates the need to use your other hand to open the wire bail in order to cast. By simply pulling on this trigger with hand holding the rod/reel, the wire bail lifts on its own, simply cast, and wind up and bail returns to reeling function. This is ideal for us because we do lots of ocean kayak fishing. It is perfect for casting out lures because you can actually cast more frequently and with less effort. Some have complained about the "slack"- -This is actually another feature to ensure right positioning of the trigger. After casting and subsequently reeling your lure, reel backwards slighly and the trigger will reposition back to you index finger ready for casting. On a side note, do not put armor all proctectant on this reel, it will deteriorate the graphite shell causing it to crack. This reel is lightweight, durable, and has outlived many of my expensive reels. In fact, this past weekend striper fishing trip made me realize how much i like this real, felt compelled to order another as a spare because its that good. This fits the bill as my gorilla reel, its has that awesome trigger, its lightweight, smooth, and reliable/durable and like timex watch use to say, "takes a licking but keeps on ticking".

Best open face reel for the price - bar none!!
I have had one of the original Quick Fire reels now for decades. The only repair I ever had to do was replace one of the spools when some cheap line swelled up and snapped it. Other than that never another cent spent on it. The purchase price back then (my Dad bought if for me) was $100 Cdn. This new Quick Fire 2 reel is a quarter of the price, much lighter in weight(more comfortable) , has and easier trigger compared to the original and has my favourite feature the rear drag. For those of you who have never experienced a rear drag reel.... get on it! If you are fighting a fish and need to adjust the drag, this is the answer. Your fingers need not go anywhere near the line and adjustment is precise and quick. Shimano (the inventer) of this nailed it completely. Truly the best there is and now at this price, you're crazy not to own at least one of these beauties - if not a whole case full. You won't find anything better in my humble opinion. Thank you Shimano. We are not worthy!!!

Haven't landed anything yet but great reel
Very nice and inexpensive reel that works very well. 8/10 all day long.I'm a beginner fisherman and I find this reel very comfortable to use; the spinning and lock mechanism seems to be fine, smooth action with out clicking or binding up.I have this installed on a collapsible 5ft rod and it's a great fishing combo.

Best under 30$+
Amazing value with features you would have to pay a lot more to get in other models! The plastic construction might seem flimsy, yet it holds on perfectly fine
