An awe-inspiring, unforgettable read
I just put down this book and my head is full of new facts and thoughts on the state of our existence and our relationship with our animal neighbours. The author, Romain Pizzi, fills every page with experience of so many facets of animal surgery and care, from observation through diagnosis, capture (or not), sampling, anaesthesia, surgery, diet, after care, recovery and release. The wealth of detail and the amazing variety of patient species is bewildering and awe-inspiring. I urge anyone with even a slight interest in wildlife and animal care to read this, and I recommend the book gets translated into as many different languages as possible. I know this would gain a sizeable readership in Spain, for example. towards the end of the book I was pleased to find Pizzi's thoughts on the direction we are headed and that it was at base optimistic din spite of all the doomsday scenarios. I particularly liked the quote "While we worry about leaving a better planet for our children, perhaps we should also leave better children for our planet" and also his quiet recommendation of a plant-based diet (after spending so much of his life up to the armpits in flesh!). This is a book to come back to again and again. There is a wealth of information in every paragraph to initiate future searches and lines of inquiry into a fascinating world. You'll need to search for the species mentioned as you read to get a better picture of the complexity of each case- who knew there were so many species of baboon, for example, or that cheetahs exist despite their dodgy genetics? This book will inspire the next generations of wildlife lovers, carers and veterinary surgeons. Highly recommended.

Absolutely captivating!
Cannot recommend this book enough – enjoyed every moment of it as I found myself lost amongst a huge diversity of species all over the world. The information and knowledge packed into these pages, plus the intriguing photographs make this a highly unusual, and absorbing read. This is a vet who is also a pioneer and who manages to find ways to treat his exotic and often highly dangerous patients in some of the toughest places in the world – and best of all succeeds. Should be read by every vet whoever wants to work with wildlife as it is truly inspirational.A really great read.

Very technical and enjoyable
I am so happy that this very busy person found the time to write this book so that we can get a glimpse into his work. The book does get quite technical in places, but everything is clear and well-explained. The author did a great job explaining the less glamorous parts of his job and opened my eyes to many aspects of environmental conservation that I wasn't aware of. Highly recommended to those interested in zoology, veterinary medicine and conservation.
