Upon opening the chest there was a musty odor (not objectionable to me) that other reviewers have noted, so for 2 days (only during daylight hours) I left it outdoors with the top and drawer open, which removed the odor.The chest has a nice shiny uniform finish with no flaws and there is more than enough space for all my flatware including the serving pieces. I choose to put all the knives in 2 of the five divisions in the drawer rather than in the lid piece.
