Old Faithful Flameless Geyser Portable Cooking System - Cook Anywhere Without Fire - MRE Freeze Dried Camping Quarantine Emergency Instant Hot Pot

BOTTOM LINE UPFRONT: BUY IT AND STOCK UP ON THE GEYSER POUCHES 8-15-20 UPDATE: On a short camping trip and the only water I had available was ice cold bottled water out the cooler. Cooker ran just as hot. Stuffed an MRE sandwich in the canteen with water and after about 45min it came out about as hot as I would have wanted via a microwave. Was concerned the cold water would have a negative effect on the effectiveness of heating the canteen water. First impression: Excellent product. Build quality, packaging, and overall functionality are 5 stars. Rationale' I bought this to complement my jetboil flash. I own a Coleman eventemp that I take out for "heavy" camping trips/picnic cookouts. For shorter/lighter camping trips I take my jetboil flash, but now I'll be taking both the geyser or just the geyser. Experiment: Since I primarily do Mountain House for these type of trips I wanted to test it out using the geyser. I opted for the new Mountain House Chicken Fajita bowl and emptied all 2.5 cups into the inner pot (see photo). I poured approximately 1.25 cups of water, sealed the inner pot and dropped it into the cooker. I'm not much of a coffee or tea drinker so I wanted to try warming up an MRE side (filled french toast) in the water canteen. It was kind of a tight fit but I made it work. I did not measure the water I poured into the canteen. I let the whole system run for exactly 10 minutes. Results: Mountain House came out fine, but I could have let it run for maybe 15-20 minutes. I would also suggest adding the exact amount of water that MH recommends. If you're familiar with MH you likely know it's better to add a little bit less than what's printed on the bag, but in this case I would have been better served adding the recommended 1.5 cups of water. I believe this is due to the fact that the water was room temperature when I added it. Had I added boiling water (like I normally do) it would have been fine. The MRE side dish (filled french toast) came out mildly warm and would have been better served by more time also. The bread of MRE sandwiches are pretty dense. I measured the water in the canteen with a good thermometer at 145F. I should note that I moved the divider that separates the pot from the canteen to allow more heat transfer from the cooking pot to the canteen. The divider is easily removed from the bag via Velcro. Summary: Overall this is a solid cook system that I could probably say is more useful than my jetboil flash. If I could only grab one in a pinch it would be the geyser. I live in a hurricane prone region and the geyser would most likely get used more in power outage scenarios. Pros: Can essentially cook two different dishes with one heater pouch since the steam is recycled. Or make coffee or tea if that's your thing. Much higher heat output then MRE ration heaters and they burn much longer. Quality construction of pots and heater bag Ability to cook non freeze dried foods Ability to use pot/canteen on campfire Cons: Pots are pretty heavy duty, but the handle on the water canteen could be beefier Overall size and weight of cook system compared to other flameless cooking options (MRE FRH, barocook, etc) Price of pouches means that each meal ends up more expensive than gas options (jetboil, MSR, Coleman, etc) Water canteen could benefit from markings to indicate ounces or at least a max fill line. There will obviously be displacement once the lid/coil is lowered but they could at least give you a max fill line.

I was very excited to get this product, having watched all the videos I could find on it. Specifically, I was excited to be able to flamelessly cook a box of mac and cheese. I followed the directions of the manufacturer to the letter and got half-raw macaroni. Put it back in for a little longer and ended up with goo instead of macaroni. It was quite unpleasant. I think it's great as a water heater, or if you need to heat up something from a can. But as an actual cooking method, I would not recommend it. Stick with a camp stove.

Our 1st test use: We filled the water side with cold filtered water from our fridge and put a 16-oz mug of frozen hot tea w manuka honey in it in the food side. A single heat packet caused bubbling sounds for about 15 min, and once in a while we saw tiny puffs of steam, and it was hot. Using only 1 heat pack until we heard no more bubbling, the cold water was gently warmed water not hot water. The 16-oz of frozen tea was about 1/2 melted and still felt very cold because half of it was still frozen solid. I wore a pair of foam lined neoprene gloves from the cleaning aisle, and I could barely feel the warmth through them. I was a little afraid I would need an ov-glove, but these did just fine. The heater pack was moist and heavier and warm to touch but our tap water feels hotter than the post-bubbling sound heat pack sounded. It did give off some great warm moist heat for another 20 min or so before it was completely cool to touch. It would, I think take 2 to 3 heat packs used in succession to have actually made the cold water side hot enough to add to an MRE, but it was warm enough to wash your face/hands but not warm enough for washing yourself elsewhere. We did start with cold water snd 16-oz of a frozen beverage, and both sides did indeed have a noticeable tempersture change. I bought this after seeing the ice storm hit Texas in February 2021 bc the storm was headed our way. The Seller remarkably managed to get this to me 3 days later while we had an inch of ice here. Our lights dimmed/brightened all day but thanfully never went out. I am glad I bought this and feel better knowing that while it may take about 3 packets and not just 1 to actually cook something, if we really needed to, we could indeed have a hot meal. That said, the food side is smaller than I thought it would be. I had the 16 oz of frozen tea sealed in a 1-qt Foodsaver vacuum zipper bag, and I was _just_ able to latch the lid on the food container. At least I now know what will and will not fit in the food side, so sealing the quart bags just half full is the way to go, and U don't want to freeze them flat! U want to freeze them standing up so all 16 oz is at the bottom half of the bag. I usually freeze my bags flat to save space in the freezer, but vertical is the way to go for meals made to heat during a power outtage. I also pressure can my own soups and casseroles in 16-oz jars, and those would work great in this thing. They start at room temperature, so I think a meal from a can would have easily heated with just the one heat pack. We are expecting yet another winter storm 3-4 days from now. Hopefully the power just stays on. The Seller did tell me that storing the heat packs in an air & water-tight container would increase their longevity. I didn't find a "use by" or a "packaged on" date on the heat packet so Buyer has no way of knowing the age of the heat packs. Perhaps Seller can let manufacturer know that such a date would be very useful for those of us who might only need our emergrncy prep kit every 1-2 years for only a day or two. Over all, I am very pleasrd both with the product and this Seller's customer care!

I have used this for a while for cooking my reheating my lunch while out working. I have found that the water heating chamber works better if you sit the heat shield over the top of the set. The inner box is Not Water Tight. The heater packs were great they keep it warmer for a good about of time. They will get everything burning hot. The bags heat shielding doesn't protect your legs, if you are dumb enough to sit it on your lap after letting it heat up. I will say that finding their brand of heating packs to replace them is not as easy as I thought it would be may have been they ran out when I look.
