The Story of Beowulf (Dover Children's Classics)

An exciting trip back in time for our grandsons...and lots of new "old" vocabulary.
Our two grandsons (8 & 12) were signed up at their hometown library for a summer reading challenge. I ordered Beowulf for their visit here; and sent them vocabulary lists for pre-visit work. They got through part of the list! We all took turns reading a chapter after lunch and discussing Old English, Norse, Danes, ogres (which the 8 year old mispronounced as og-ree to their amusement), Barbarians/Goths, epics and sagas, etc.. WE all were captivated by this readable ancient tale and the boys took the unfinished book home. They sent us a summary of what happened in the conclusion, as we got to Beowulf's battle with the Ogre and his mother the Sea Witch. They learned a great deal about life in that era and began to pronounce Wieglif (and other names) as easily though it were really "Bob"! We all had a great summer adventure reading these historic sagas.

Disappointed. Be aware!
I chose this because I wanted a hardbound copy. It IS a hardbound copy but the pages are not bound well. Many fell out when I first opened this book. The pages are cheap copies. Not pleased. Too much of a hassle to return, but want to spare others from a bad experience. I only write reviews when the product is truly subpar. This product earned the bad review. Buyer beware!

Taught special ed class with it
I teach 10 grade special ed kids, and they loved the Odyssey so I thought they might enjoy this. This version of Beowulf was perfect for them. 10 chapters, 5 pages each. The language has a touch of old English to it which adds to the authenticity and in creating the setting. Not too many difficult vocabulary terms, and very to the point with lots of action. Kids loved it.

Beowulf for Reading Out Loud
Written in a voice that is easy for young readers to understand yet linguistically interesting. Story sounds exciting and similar to watching a movie or listening to a good podcast.
