Beautiful book.

This is a gorgeous book on William Morris and the Arts & Crafts home. It is narrated with sympathy and depth by art historian Pamela Todd. Large colorful images illustrate this book. Topics include exteriors, designs for living, decorative patterns, comfort and craft, the softer elements and finishing touches. A variety of Arts & Crafts homes are featured. There are six case studies. Specialist suppliers of arts and crafts elements are provided as well as a comprehensive bibliography. I found this book a delight to read - although did notice a few repetitions in quotes, but that didn't spoil the enjoyment of the book. Loved the many quotes by William Morris who was articulate as he was artistic. He was a true Renaissance individual. Loved the quote by his doctor who claimed that when William Morris died at the young of 62 attributed the cause of death to "simply being William Morris."

If you appreciate anything to do with the Arts & Crafts movement, you'll really like this book -- even if you look only at the pictures. It's separated into sections on exteriors and gardens; interiors (architecture); decorative patterns (wallpapers and woven fabric); furniture; softer elements (curtains, rugs, carpets, etc.); finishing touches (ornament, tiles).Each has plenty of detail: you see the overall effect (the entire wall of wallpaper) and the specific design (a zoom in on the wallpaper's design). Even if you care about only one element (you're into fabric for instance) you'll get plenty out of this book.

A stunning work. Would make a wonderful gift. Cannot understand the criticism of one reviewer who described it as “too dark”. The plates are impeccable and the text is rich and enjoyable. I am delighted with my purchase.

ウイリアム・モリスの本と言えば、花柄などの生地や壁紙・装飾本・タペストリーに伝記が付いてるものが主流ですが、この本はまぁそれも扱いますけど主眼はそれらを使ったインテリアや生活であり、レッドハウスの計画時図面なども登場しますし、モリス商会で扱っていたサセックスチェアーカタログなどの紹介あります。手入れの行き届いた広い庭からレンガ造りで天井の高いサロン・マントルピース、飾られてる絵画や使われてる調度品の情報が多く登場し、具体的でとても参考になります。マントルピースにしても、この本で紹介されてる物件において既に火を入れる実用品とは限らず、和室の床の間のような使い方をしてる例もありましたし、モリス柄タイルでシンメトリーに両脇を飾る様な物もあります（暖房はベンチ下などにセントラルヒーティングの放熱器が見えます）アメリカ人のビクトリアン内装が悪趣味に思える人には是非目を通してもらいたい。
