Daily Strength: A Devotional for Men

Real Strength
Oh God, I need strength from you for this day.The strength of this book is not just in the outward quality. The case-binding does make for an impressive presentation and allows the book to lay flat on a desk or table when open. The book has a weighty feel and ribbon marker that inspire an air of quality. The binding along with the fabric cover, help make this a highly durable book for everyday use. But the real value of this volume is what's written on the pages inside the cover. The daily readings are short but packed with inspiration. These readings begin in Genesis and move through to the book of Revelation. From what I can see, when the readings move to another book of the Bible, the author also changes. There are a few pages in the front of the book that list all the authors and their credentials. I have previously read material from a few of these authors but the majority are new to me. In doing some sample reading throughout the book, I have not found anything that seems to be a mishandling of God's Word. Unfortunately that's not true of many devotional books these days. I have not found readings that appear to be especially masculine. I believe a man or a woman would benefit equally from these daily readings. I'm thankful for Christian publishers like Crossway who strive to stay true to Scripture. The real value in this book is that it inspires readers to look more closely into the God's Book. So often I look to other sources to get strength for my day. Our only real strength is in the Lord.

Solid teaching in a good format
I have been using this devotional for morning reading and quiet time. The short of it is that it's a solid, theologically sound collection of Bible-based devotionals.First of all, you should be aware that if you have the ESV Men's Devotional Bible, this material is simply a subset of that. If you don't it, then this is obviously going to be more useful to you.The arrangement (after a very brief intro) is what I really like. The material is dated for every day of the year and is arranged chronologically through the Bible. So, e.g. January 1 starts at the beginning of Genesis. Each day's reading has an associated Bible passage that you should read first, then a ~1 page (smallish print) devotional reading that tries to apply the scripture.Another interesting feature is that there are numerous different authors for the devotionals, all with fairly solid credentials and no obvious glaring issues. Each book of the Bible, however, sticks to the same author for the devotional readings associated with it, with an author sometimes taking more than 1 consecutive book for shorter books in particular. Then when the devotionals move on to the next book, the author of the devotionals changes. The same authors rotate through different books throughout the Bible, so it's not 66 different authors. I like the variety and diversity of teaching styles this brings.Overall the devotional is very good and will be a part of my mornings for at least a year.

Well done, very readable, and easy to understand.
I like this devotional quite a bit, and that coming from someone who, in general, does not like devotionals at all.The entries are about one to one and a half pages each, so they only take ten minutes or so each day, and don't have enough space for the author to lead you off into the weeds of dogma (my main gripe with most devotionals). If anything, a subtle slant towards reformed Calvinism. So far, I have found each day's entry to be useful, with today's being particularly impactful. All have been well written, understandable, and concise. Each entry starts with the date you are expected to read it (one for each day of the year), and the Bible verse used. Some of the entries contain the verse, but for most you need to read it first in your own bible. The book is a cloth bound hardback, about 6x9x1.375 inches, very easy to hold. The binding is good quality and should last for years without pages or signatures falling out. The paper is off-white (less eye strain) and 120mic (slightly thicker than 24lb copy paper). As a dyslexic, the font used can make a big difference for me. This is printed with a serif font that I find very readable. Crossway does not give the name of the font like they sometimes do in their bibles. The main text is about 10 point.Overall, a nice book and a good devotional.

Great Resource for Men!
This is a fantastic compilation of some of the best Crossway authors, speaking devotionally specifically to our brothers in Christ. Each devotional is tied to a text of scripture and the writing sticks to the text. It starts at the beginning of the Bible in Genesis and while it doesn't cover everything, it hits the big major highlights as it systematically works its way through the Bible over the course of the year. Any man would benefit from reading this book, but I feel like it would be specifically beneficial to husbands and fathers due to how often it speaks to men in those specific roles. What really makes this stand out to me from the crowd of available devotionals is the fact that the various devotionals come from so many different voices and perspectives, while staying true to the word of God. It's also a very nice looking book. I would definitely consider this to be giftable.

fantastic
We love this devotional. I got it for my husband, who tends to be picky about stuff like this. But he's actually using it as a devotional! And I am thoroughly enjoying the woman's version. Both are solid Biblically, written by well known reform theology believers. We both like that the author of each devotion is named, so we are learning which authors' styles we enjoy reading most and it's drawing us to want to read more from those individuals. Although all are well written, everyone is naturally drawn to different styles. This book is high quality, and very well made. It would make a fantastic gift for the right guy.Although there's nothing in this devotional that really screams it's for men only. The devotions focus on diving deeper into the Word, in Biblical ways. They doesn't focus on what a man should get out of it, but rather how a Christian should respond.
