Low vitamin D runs in my family and has been an issue for me. Because it’s an issue when it shows up low on my annual physical I take supplements to bring it back up and get rechecked every 6 months until it is back where it should be. I went through a few supplement brands before ordering this one. The others did not work well in getting my levels back up. This one was great. Easy to swallow small capsules. I usually take 10 a week. No stomach issues and my levels increased back up to where they should be quickly.

If you live in the sunny south but wear sunblock, the lower dose is probably enough. Best to check via blood test to make sure you’re not over- or under-doing it!

My doctor prescribed me to take the Vitamin D3 5000 IU supplement daily. IU means International Unit and the actual value of each IU depends upon the type of vitamin. For Vitamin D 1 microgram of Vitamin D is equal to 40IU. These are softgel capsules. They look like normal gelatin based softgels and are golden yellow in appearance. WHAT IS VITAMIN D In the early 20th century scientists were trying to find a vaccine/cure for rickets. Cod liver oil was found to prevent rocket and it was assumed that Vitamin A (in the cod liver oil) was responsible for curing rickets. However, upon further research it was found that cod liver oil was able to cure rickets even if the Vitamin A was removed from the cod liver oil. It was then realized that the substance responsible for curing rickets was different than Vitamin A and it was named as Vitamin D (since this was fourth vitamin to be discovered.) Vitamins were given generic names (A,B,C,D) because the exact chemical composition names of these vitamins were not known. thus they were given generic names. Vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium, magnesium, and phosphate. Deficiency of Vitamin D can cause bone issues such as rickets, osteoporosis (weak bones), osteomalacia (bone pain) Generally to check the levels of Vitamin D a bllod test is done called as 25-hydroxy vitamin D test . Healthy people have Vitamin D levels between 20 ng/mL (nanograms/milliliter) to 50 ng/mL. WHAT IS VITAMIN D3 Upon further research there were different forms of Vitamin D found, Vitamin D1, D2, D3, D4, D5. They have slightly different compositions but have same effect on the body. Vitamin D3 is chemically known as calciferol. HOW DOES BODY GET VITAMIN D3 Most of the Vitamin D in body is generated by body itself by a process that is triggered by exposure to sunlight. The epidermal layer of our skin contains 7-Dehydrocholesterol which is a precursor to vitamin D. When the sun’s ultraviolet rays touch the skin, they convert 7-Dehydrocholesterol to a molecule called vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol. This vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol is an inactive form (meaning that body cannot use it yet.) Liver and kidney help to convert cholecalciferol to an active/useful form by converting it to calcifediol and calcitriol respectively. calcitriol is the form of Vitamin D that body can use. So, if body is not able to get exposure to sun, then vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol cannot be synthesized. The Vitamin D3 supplements can help in this. Once the body gets Vitami D3 supplement, body can convert it to an active/useful form of Vitamin D. There are also other food sources of Vitamin D such as Lichen, cod liver oil, salmon, egg yolk. But some amount of Vitamin D is lost depending upon how food is cooked and it is difficult to absorb Vitamin D from food sources as well. Some other food items are also fortified with Vitamin D such as milk. VITAMIN D DOSAGE When atmospheric conditions are ideal and skies are clear, 30 minutes of whole-body exposure of pale skin to sunlight without clothing or sunscreen can result in the synthesis of between 10,000 and 20,000 IU of vitamin D. These quantities of vitamin D are large, and therefore capable of supplying the body's full needs. However, if you are in a line of work like me where I spend most of my time inside, getting sufficient exposure to sun is difficult.
