Does the beam adjust.... Spot to broad?

If I'm not mistaken, the design of a Krypton bulb which generally produces a very powerful more pointed light beam cannot also be made to adjust in a flashlight to produce a wider flood type light beam.

How many lumens of light does this flashlight put out?

Having had this flashlight for years, I can attest that the beam is concentrated, not diffuse, very bright and can throw a beam the half mile as claimed. I am going to replace the light with another as the switch gave out.

Does the front of the lantern screw off to allow me to insert a colored gel for use in "painting" objects during nighttime photography?

Yes, the front of the lantern can be removed by unscrewing... I just hope your camera have a good bright flash; you're gonna need it as this lantern is not bright enough to illuminate objects at night...

Can you show how to put 4 D cell batteries in the compartment?

Unscrew the top, you will see what looks like a square box with springs. Take it out put the batteries in according to the positive and negative.
