OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!
The Farseer Trilogy is outstanding fantasy writing, by every measure. The entire series; which includes The Tawney Man Trilogy and the Fitz And The Fool Trilogy; covers the life story of Fitzchivalry Farseer, bastard son of Prince Chivalry Farseer. Abandoned by his original family to the care of the Farseers, six year old Fitz is given over to the Stablemaster; Burrich; to raise. Once Fitz comes to the attention of King Shrewd, it is decided that Fitz needs to be put to a useful purpose, so he is sent to Chade Fallstar; another Farseer bastard; and trained to be an assassin. The first three books follow Fitz as he grows into manhood, practices his art as an assassin, and gets to know the residents of the castle. His special friend is the Fool, and much of what takes place in these books, centers around that friendship. There are two magic systems in this story; the Wit and the Skill. Fitz possesses them both. The Wit allows the user to develop a companion bond to an animal, and indeed, people who possess the Wit cannot help but be drawn to make a bond. Yet, the Wit is is discouraged and socially offensive to non users. Despite this, Fitz bonds with a wolf cub, that he rescues from a hateful captivity, and this relationship is sustained throughout the first six books. We get to follow Fitz as he makes his way in the world, encountering extremely dangerous situations in his work for the King, and we feel his pain as battle wounds, fatigue, age, and disappointment take their toll. Still, Fitz is surrounded by people who love and cherish him, even though he is not always aware of it. His role as assassin; and the life of secrecy that demands; and his choice to be Wit bonded, means that he lives a life that is largely isolated from those who would offer their love and support. Robin Hobb's writing style is unparalleled. It is easy to read, draws the reader in, and makes you love and deeply care about all of the characters; Fitz, Nighteyes, Burrich, Chade, the Fool, Patience, King Shrewd, Verity, and more. Her world building is superb. This is a story for the Ages, one to return to again and again. You can't consider yourself any kind of expert on fantasy literature until you've read these books.
