A Fresh Take on a Familiar Make
Clearly other reviewers don't understand how to play this game.- Weapons don't do any damage: How far are you? Did you upgrade any of them yet? Each weapon has 4 "levels" - not to mention the base level - if your weapon is grey in the menu, then it's a bare bones run-of-the-mill grabbed it off a dumpster weapon.- Combat is sluggish: Which type of weapon are you using? Heavy-Duty or Single Rigged Weapons in general have "low" attack speeds. Have you tried a Medium or High speed weapon yet? Doesn't do enough damage? Upgrade it. Balance between speed and damage is a positive / negative relationship. Slower weapons do more damage than faster weapons but you can swing the faster ones more times.- Environments don't look good: Are you kidding me? The game is polished. Textures are there. Sure when you break a box, the pieces don't fall correctly sometimes and it can get annoying with some physics based mechanics, but the game looks good.Negativity aside, here are the positives, in my opinion:- Level Design is superb: If you enjoy the open-world feel of Dark Souls without the mission / menu screen progress of Nioh, you will enjoy Surge. There are NPC's that you can find and each has an interesting feel and you wonder where their side-quests lead. Discovery of hidden paths and shortcuts back to your main hub is one of the best draws to the game.- Combat / Environment sounds are satisfying: metal on metal crunch, machinery hydraulics, industrial sound boards -- all well implemented and create a believable atmosphere for the game.- XP / Leveling RPG Elements: You start the game at level 10. In the first level, there is a "secret box" that requires a level 55 character to open. 25+ hours into the game, I am at level 53. I have explored 4 areas of the game, and the game feels like it has about 8 or 9 areas. Like Dark Souls, each level costs more XP which makes it harder to level up. There are corridors and passageways that require levels before opening. Those critical to the story path are always Level 10, so you can always get past those, but it makes you wonder what's behind Door Number 2.- Weapons / Armor: The game has loads of weapons, including variants. Each boss you beat drops loot, but if you defeat it in a certain way (usually the only common sense way to "weaken" the machine before killing it) it drops a unique boss weapon to use. Armor can be mixed and matched and leveled up. Each weapon and armor piece can be leveled up from Mk.1 to Mk. 4. If you create 2 arms, 2 legs, a chest piece, and helmet of the same type you can achieve a "set bonus" for wearing it. Each set is unique, and all look great in action. I found it amusing how each suit also has a different place that illuminates areas to provide the flashlight, including different colors and flashlight types.- Enemies are varied and bosses are interesting: In each area, you're going to encounter similar enemies but the developers do a great job of keeping them varied and unique to their type, which allows you to see them at a distance and know their combat moves and styles (after you learn them of course). The boss fights I've encountered (3 so far) are interesting and satisfying to defeat. Unlike Dark Souls which brings a boss's health down by simply hacking away at it and avoiding attacks, in The Surge the bosses' health bars will only diminish substantially after their strengths have been mitigated. Usually this involves destroying their attacking limbs, but it's an additional strategy that is welcome in this genre of gaming. I love Dark Souls for it's environments and "wow" factor of boss battles, but Surge gives you a bit of problem solving, and once you discover how to weaken a behemoth machine and bring it to it's "knees" - the feeling of accomplishment is very fulfilling.- Story hauntingly grounded in a futuristic reality: The story can be frighteningly plausible. Not to spoil anything here but mechs have already been in our media and introduced in ways that seem as if they could happen soon (Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, The Matrix, Edge of Tomorrow). This story may not be fresh but it's certainly not stale. It gives some enjoyable environmental storytelling as you are hulking through the vast RPG elements of the game.I can't say it enough: Deck13 has a great game on their hands with The Surge. It ate through my hours on the weekend, and I have an overwhelming urge to jump back into the game and flesh it out some more. It's worth every penny, in my honest opinion. If you're on the fence with this one, wait for a price drop to the $50 range. Most hardcore gamers will not be disappointed with this offering. It's challenging, but the rewards are quenching.

If you don't like Souls you will not like this game
Let me get one thing clear. If you don't like Souls you will not like this game, PERIOD. Now if you do like Souls games then this game should be liked if not loved. I want to make another thing clear, this game is Souls like. The combat will of course feel somewhat similar to Souls and that's where a vast majority of the similarities end. So the game does feel Souls like in a sense but it is clearly its own game with its own things. Some of the things that set it apart are the leveling up, implants, and upgrading of weapons and gear. The bosses also stand out as not only do you need to learn their patterns but there is also a trick to killing them. Also instead of bonfires like everywhere there is only one per level and it is called a medbay. This leads to some really cool level designs like found in dark souls. There are lots of short cuts that lead back to the medbay in really cool ways. The graphics are also very well done and are on par with most AAA games.Overall a very good game that I think is worth everypenny. If you love Souls you should love this game as well.

Crappy Doom clone.
This is a horrible game, with sluggish controls, bad action, and very little role playing. Sorry, I wasted my money.

Got monotonous really fast
One gripe right at the beginning was the level design and difficulty. I found the level layout a bit confusing and you are constantly going in circles and figuring out where to go next. I know these type of games don't have maps, but really it could have used one. This was more of a task than it needed to be figuring out the layout. And backtracking the same sections over and over, fighting the same boring enemies, wore on me fast. And yes, you will die a lot. The difficulty will be very hard unless you learn to level up all of your equipment right away, but the problem for me is, I just didn't find the weapons or armor all that interesting.I also found the combat very sluggish and monotonous in this game. And having to press the X button to wait for a finishing move just takes too long and you may die in the process of trying to complete it.Now, I am not a novice to these type of games. I have finished all the DS games. Although I enjoyed the grind in DS, could not find the same level of satisfaction in this game. Could be I just hated the leveling system and looks of my character. Really, you look like someone wearing junk, and you feel like you are protected by junk, and you feel like you are fighting with junk -- that's just too much junk. (Probably what a lot of readers are saying now about this review!)On the plus side, the frame rate is stable at 60 FPS. (On the Xbox One X anyway). And it does have a quality production feel -- meaning it doesn't feel like something they rushed out the door.Either way, if you have some patience, you may find some enjoyment here. But for me, it just seemed like a familiar game, in a different skin, but not as fun.One last note about the difficulty. Some developers think a game with high difficulty equates to fun. It does not. Not every gamer has the same skill level and you are alienating those who find these type of games difficult. You should always give the player a choice. If I want it difficult, I will select a higher difficulty. This goes for the DS games. I know people who would love to play it, but would give up after the first section. I was able to finish this game. It was easier than a DS game, but I feel bad for those players (like one of the reviewers here who wanted to give up gaming) because they could not make it through the first part.

Graphics and gameplay are not bad, but you end up playing through the same bits of the game (with the same bots you just killed) over and over whenever you upgrade. Makes the game tediuous and repetitive after the first couple of screens. Good concept - poor execution. Would not recommend.

Hard to put down.
Never really got into Dark Souls, but The Surge had something special about it that just drew me in. This game isn't perfect, but it's one of the most entertaining titles I've played in a long time. Once you start, it's hard to stop.
