Yes it is better to play first if possible. Most serious classical guitarists dont play acoustic electrics. There are things you can do to help this guitar out like replacing the stock saddle to one that is a little taller (made of bone) and replacing the stock strings. This will help with both the volume and tone and is a very cheap modification. Yamaha generally makes good production guitars and has good quality control. Unless you are buying a 3000 dollar guitar i think you will be fine buying online from a well known brand. If you plan on learning classical get the regular non acoustic version. Classical guitar is all about making the guitar produce the tone you want which is not accomplished in any way with electronics. If you dont like it you can always return it.
