I'm not a vet or anything but from my reading, for the betterment of my own elderly cat, Senior cats need a slightly higher fiber-to-protein ratio. Looking at the labels of the regular pate chicken, there's slightly more fiber in this version. So that's likely the intended tradeoff.

Q: What is the texture of this food? I need to put a pill in it. I don’t mind messy fingers but it has to be thick enough when pressed.

This is a pate, so it has a uncooked meatloaf consistency. However I'm not confident that it would hold shape enough to disguise a pill, as it is easily mushed (think of that uncooked meatloaf minus crackers, bread crumbs or rice as a shape/molding stabilize. I honestly think you'd be better off purchasing some pill pockets. Hope this helps answer your question and decide whether it's suitable to yours and your pets needs.
