Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely

Stunningly Unsurpassable
Firstly, please know that I am not anything remotely close to an afficiando when it comes to Frank;nonetheless, it's quite difficult for me to imagine that he has ever surpassed this absolute gem in his entire career. I can only believe, now and forever that he may? have equalled this brilliant effort but never surpassed it. From start to finish, the performance, the songwriting, arrangments, choice of songs and even the order in which they appear are amazing in every way. Frank's delivery is so pitch perfect that you instantly know that you have never heard better pure singing in your entire life by anyone and that you never will again. If you cannot feel the heartbreak, pain and utter despair that pervades this album, you have no heart, no soul and are so devoid of any real life that you may already be dead. The remastered sound is so crystaline and detailed that you will swear you are literally in the studio. Like Sinatra, I am also certain that this was also the apex for Nelson Riddle as well. On occasions that are ever so rare, it all comes together in deeply magical ways, and this is one such occasion. If you simply live and breathe, buy this NOW. Even if you neither live nor breathe but have a good healthy morbid curiosity about Frank you should still buy it. This album will make you feel things you have never felt, things you didn't even know you felt as it's truly that powerful and if I could I'd give it 100 stars.Think of this as the greatest works of Rembrandt,Picasso and Dali all combined into one magnicient work and then you have some understanding of the broad and achingly beautiful brush strokes that all combined somehow managed to paint here.Without a doubt this is one of the greatest works of art ever produced and a thousand years from now people will still care and still listen. When one encounters a work such as this, there is no test of time for time truly stops and the music is indelibly and universally timeless. Let's all drink a toast to Frank and the great Nelson Riddle for that and know that others will toast them forever as well. Only those on the wagon are excused.

Sinatra Defines Loneliness With These Superb Torch Songs
My mother, who used to be a Frank Sinatra bobby-soxer, played this album frequently while I was a kid. I copped it for my own once I hit high school and began to have a series of catastrophic crushes, as do most teens. This is definitely music to mourn to. "In The Wee Small Hours" is Frank at his bleakest. He was in the process of getting over his marriage to Ava Gardner and still carrying a torch. His sorrow here is palpable. These beautiful ballads are filled with the sound of heartbreak. If you haven't heard this album, you may think I am being corny, or over-exaggerating. But, hey! This is real eat-your-heart-out music! For me, it is Frank Sinatra's greatest album and includes some of the best ballads ever written."In The Wee Small Hours" is another of the successful collaborations between Sinatra and arranger Nelson Riddle for Capitol Records. I still have the old 33 and 1/3 recording, and it never sounded as good as this remastered version. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be "Good-Bye." The lyrics get me ever time, as does the despair in Old Blue Eyes' voice. His version of "Willow Weep for Me" is the best I have heard, and "One For My Baby," where he pours his heart out to a bartender, is extraordinary. Other favorites include "Angel Eyes," "What's New," and "It's A Lonesome Old Town," which really defines loneliness. Of course everyone has their own favorites. The point here is that all the songs are special and the Great One's voice is mellow, poignant and so sad. The best!JANA

Some of the best Frank Sinatra
The arrangements were superb and turned the tunes in lush sounding tone poems. The lyrics as delivered by Frank Sinatra became heart wrenching novellas of love, longing, and despair. If you don't like this group of tunes you don't like music.

Feeling the Loneliness
It has been said many times that when you listen to Sinatra you feel that he is singing just for you. He had that quality. This album is beautifully melancholic. Sinatra sings of loneliness and you really feel something here. I think you feel the loneliness in Sinatra's voice and it is something that he is sharing with you. You feel he has experienced loneliness and he now gives that felt emotion over to you perhaps to feel some void or emptiness you have or have had in your life. He shares this with you to let you know that you are not alone. He lets you know of the heartbreaking moments found in life and helps you reflect with his genuine and sincere delivery of these songs and their lyrics. This is one of Sinatra's most endearing albums to me. I have found that I must listen to it from time to time.

Good but in small doses
These are all good to great songs sung by the guy who sings a song like no one else. The theme is "Only the Lonely" and they are just that. The first time I listened to it was on a cold, dark late winter evening. Suddenly the room was full of a lady or two I had known back in the day who somehow slipped away much to my regret. One is named Janice. Suddenly every song was about her. It was time to change and listen to Frank and Count Basie at the Sands. I've listened to all the songs and really like the collection but if I go past two or three I hear her footsteps approaching. Memory, it's a great thing.

Frank at his heartbreaking best
I bought this album based on the recommendation I read on allmusic.com, keeping in mind my love for the beautiful song "One for my baby (and one more for the road)". This is a heartbreaking record that shows Frank at his most vulnerable. It is also reputedly his favourite album and that's not something one should take lightly. He sings from the bottom of his heart with all of his soul bared for the world to see and hear. A masterpiece in every respect.

Only The Lonely
I can quite understand how this recording was the favourite of Frank Sinatra's repertoire. It is beautiful because the arrangement is so professional and the melodies are heart-warming. This CD was one of his best performances.
