Hess & Daley have written a clear guide to the coaching methodology augmented by examples from their years of experiences as coaches. As someone who went through coach training in the last couple of years, at first I wasn't sure how this book would fit with what I learned. Would it be consistent with the methodology I learned? Would it add anything to the conversation? The sections on establishing a good relationship with and securing the client engagement and conducting 360s were very practical for me and went beyond the level of detail I had learned in my coaching courses. Other chapters reaffirmed and reminded me of much that I had learned before and serve as a good reference point. Also included in the book are coaching competencies and a SUPER HELPFUL "sticky situations matrix" that demonstrate the authors' deep experience with the types of issues that can arise. I am happy to say that I can see returning to this book over and over as my coaching practice evolves. Right now, I really need to refresh myself on many of the more detailed practices and ground myself again in the value to the client of the coach's intentional intervention. It also includes several sample tools and checklists, along with the Intentional Coaching Framework, which is helpful in understanding the key components of an engagement. Do Your Best Coaching is a fast and easy read since it is told through the eyes of a coach, Andie, as she works with a leader on his specific goals.
