Very solid quality
This is a very good quality tatami mat. I’ve always slept on the typical box spring and overtime it just sinks and makes my back hurt. Being Japanese I figured I’d try out the more traditional Eastern style of sleeping. The tatami mat has a solid structure that’s noticeably softer than carpet. Just standing on it, the pressure on your feet is relieved. I originally intend to add a futon on top for sleeping but tried out sleeping the night just on the tatami mat. I had a great night sleep on it. I’m mostly a side sleeper so it did hurt my sides a bit but this is just on the tatami mat. If you add a futon it should feel a whole lot more comfortable. Overall, a solid tatami mat with good weight to it. Easily folds up and can function as a bottom bed piece, yoga, or standing mat. Just a word of warning, this has a strong bamboo odor when first unpacked. It only took a day for the smell to dissipate.

Sturdy, heavy and well-made
This is a heavy, sturdy mat. My son (18) decided he wanted a Japanese-style futon floor mattress, so we got this mat to go under it. The hope is that having the mattress on a mat like this will prevent the mattress from getting moisture trapped under it. The mat definitely has a smell. It's not unpleasant. It's just kind of earthy and grassy. It was really strong at first, and after a couple weeks use, it has dissipated somewhat. But when his door is closed and you walk into his room, you can still smell it. I suspect it'll just become part of the smell of our house. I don't mind the smell, but it is there. He has allergies pretty bad (mostly hay fever), so I was worried this might make it worse, but it doesn't seem to have affected his allergies. It is very firm and stiff, and I personally wouldn't recommend sleeping just on this, but with his futon pad, it's pretty comfortable.

Great, natural and high quality
Awesome natural smell. Steady and soft. Very useful. Great quality. Perfectly light and thick enough to support. Easy to put down and fold back. Easy storage and move. Color looks consistent.

Well made and sturdy. Smells like the a grassy field at first, but the smell fades with time.
Initially has a strong grassy smell but I'd rather smell plants than VOCs from plastics. Well made and sturdy. Coupled with a good futon this mat makes a nice visitor sleeping arrangement for small apartments. A foldaway Japanese arrangement that is more elegant and comfortable than just making a visitor sleep on the floor on an inflatable vinyl mattress.

Firm and smells nice
Nice and firm and folds up easily with two straps to hold it. Easy to clean, the grassy smell is nice like cool summer nights. It's made in China though which is a bummer.

Excellent Tatami
Thick enough to provide a good surface for a futon mattress. The rubber grips function well on the bottom and keep it in place excellently. It also folds away for easy storage. Not terribly hard to clean, and I found the smell quite pleasant. I’ve been sleeping very well since getting this and the futon.

Great budget tatami!
I got the foldable one and the cushion it provides underneath my futon is perfect. folds up easily it's pretty light, great quality, I have experienced no excessive smell. When I first unfolded it in my room there was a light grassy smell, but I just personally love the smell of grass, so not a problem for me. Still, I cant even smell it now unless I used the mat for yoga and my face was right next to it. Maybe some peoples' mats use fresher/ healthier grass that smells more? I think this mat will last for a while the weave is sturdy and flexible under pressure of feet. I'm very impressed with this tatami

Sturdy and Versatile!
I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I bought this, but it's been a huge game changer for my mattress. It keeps things in place nicely, it smells great, and even on its own it's very comfortable!
