Barney Miller and the Files of the Ol’ One-Two

I enjoyed reading this book. It filled a lot of holes in my memory and revived a lot of memories from when I watched the show. Hundreds of times!

Really well written. Highly recommend even if you didn’t watch the series. Fun read, the author’s love for his subject comes through.

It was a nice book but I was disappointed to find it is just info from all the shows. The scripts are not as interesting to me as pics and personal information on the cast.

Cop sitcom Barney Miller ran for eight years in the 1970s and early '80s and stands as one of the smartest, most soulful shows in TV history. (The finest for my taste.) Hilariously funny, it had a dramatic edge and dealt with then-daring social issues like racial conflict and women's and gay rights, as well as simple everyday human foibles. The cast, writing and direction were remarkable and the show is as funny now as it was 40-something years ago. (I know - I own the box set and still watch it regularly.)Otto Bruno has written a thorough history of the show with background information on the creative team responsible. There are a lot of thin books about TV shows, but this is a 500-plus page epic that will thrill Barney Miller fans, but also holds interest for anyone interested in 1970s American social and cultural history. Much like the show refused to condescend to its audience, the book respects the reader, never treating them like shallow boob tubers, but literate and intelligent devotees of first-rate edgy and irreverent entertainment. The author has clearly expended time and energy and thoroughly researched his subject.I've read the book once and am now going back and re-reading certain sections. I also keep it handy when re-watching the show to inform me of each episode's background. There is no finer television history.

What a well researched book. Otto must have spent a lot of time on this book. It is a long book but it is a lot of fun to read. Well done Otto-a labor of love I am sure. Reading it for the second time . So much info.
