Humanoids from the Deep (Roger Corman's Cult Classics)

Send 'Em To Hell !!
I can remember when I watched this for the first time on cable TV back in the '80s. I loved it and still do! If you grew up in the age of the "animal kingdom gone wild" theme of the late '70s to early '80s as I did, you will enjoy this one. Roger Corman does a good job and comes up with a campy sea creature not like anything we have seen before. When a sleepy fishing village comes into contact with several "humanoids", they don't know what to make of it at first. Accidents happen and a few citizens begin to disappear. The fishermen and town sheriff are baffled, until a woman scientist comes to town with her own theory. The native Indian residents want the fishing rights restored and don't want a new cannery coming in to make matters worse. The local men do want the cannery and most of the citizens agree, saying it will bring jobs to Noyo. However, the scientists have tampered with the DNA of local fish and that only means trouble for the entire town as they are forced to deal with a potential and grave threat to their very survival. The yearly salmon carnival at the end of the movie is one carnival the creatures will make sure their presence is finally known to all. This edition is wonderful! This is the International Uncut version, not the American version released on DVD in 1999. I believe it is somewhat more graphic, especially that of a man that is attacked at the carnival and has his head literally torn off from one of the humanoids. Looks pretty good even for today's standards and back then, there was no CGI. Everything was models, masks, and makeup. The Menu is well done with music from the movie in the background and film footage clips, "Humanoids From the Deep" graphic in yellow on top center with selections "Play" "Chapters" "Bonus" underneath. The woman laying on the beach with the Red bikini is on the menu as well.Special Features Include:Never Before Deleted Scenes found in the vaults of MGM. Audio was missing for some of the scenes, but were included for rarity.~ What appears to be the alternate opening scene of a blonde woman taking off her yellow "dress" and going in for a nude swim, then getting attacked by one of the humanoids. (no sound)~ A couple is parked in their car making out at night, only to find out they are not alone.~ A little girl finds the body of the teenager that got attacked and had his face half torn washed ashore, she nearly gets taken by one of the humanoids, her mother wants to investigate, but opts not to and gets out of the area quickly.~ Ann Turkel, Doug McClure and the Indian characters in a boat getting ready to do some investigating on the river. (no sound).~ A woman in a tight pink shirt (braless) is trying to reel in her catch only to have to go further in the water. She quickly discovers what was on the other end of the line and is dragged out to sea by the creature.~ A humanoid staring into a window of the house that gets attacked toward the end of the movie. (no sound).~ Vic Morrow's character meets up with some of his buddies at the local bar to discuss what is happening. Alternate from what appears in movie..(no sound). The Making of Humanoids From the Deep: Featuring New Interviews with Roger Corman, Second Unit Director James Sbardellati, Actress Linda Shayne (Miss Salmon) (yummy!), Actress Cindy, Cindy Weintraub, Composer James Horner and a few more on the camera and effects crew.Leonard Maltin Interviews Roger Corman on the making of the Film.Radio SpotTV SpotPoster and Still GalleryTrailers...English and German for "Humanoids From The Deep"Galaxy of TerrorForbidden WorldUp From The DepthsAudio is English PCM 2.0, no subtitlesSidenote: If you have the American Version on DVD that came out, I suggest you may want to keep that in conjunction with this edition. This review pertains to the Scream Factory remastered steelbook bluray edition
"Humanoids from the Deep" (which was released as "Monster" in Europe and Japan) is a memorable 1980 creature exploitation film featuring copious amounts of sex, female nudity, gore and cool creature designs by special effects legend Rob Bottin. It has a great cast consisting of Doug McClure, Ann Turkel, Vic Morrow and Lynn Schiller. It is b-movie fun and then some!Shout Factory first brought "Humanoids from the Deep" to blu-ray back in 2010. That release featured the uncut international version of the film with the title card reflecting the alternate international title of "Monster". This initial bluray presented the film on a single layer disc in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio utilizing the AVC codec with a decent bit rate usually hovering around the mid 20's. This original blu-ray release was good for the time but there was definite room for improvement due to the film had a washed out and at times digitally processed look to it. More than likely Shout Factory had to work with an older HD master provided to them back in 2010.Thankfully Shout Factory under their Scream Factory subsidiary would revisit this film for a limited edition steelbook release in 2019. For the steelbook rerelease they did a brand new 4K scan from the original camera negative of the uncut international version of the film. The film is presented in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio on a dual layer disc this time utilizing the AVC code at a bit rate which stays locked in at 36 mbps throughout. The new 4K scan is a big improvement over the 2010 disc in my opinion. Detail is much better along with much more balanced contrast and black levels. The black crush which was an issue with the 2010 blu-ray has been resolved with the new 2019 4K scan. The steelbook remaster is well worth double dipping on if you are a fan of this film. One interesting side note is that the steelbook transfer retains the US title of "Humanoids from the Deep" rather than "Monster" which I found interesting. I compared the runtimes of each disc and they are the same so the steelbook is indeed uncut too.Audio is again presented in 2 channel master audio sounding fine and clear. English subtitles are included for the hearing impaired. All extras from the original blu-ray release have been ported over with nothing new being adding which is a slight disappointment. I was hoping for a commentary track of some sort. Extras are as follows:- "The Making Of Humanoids From The Deep" – Featuring Interviews With Executive Producer Roger Corman, Editor Mark Goldblatt, Second Unit Director James Sbardellati, Composer James Horner, Special Effects Artists Chris Walas And Kenny Myers, Actors Cindy Weintraub And Linda Shayne- Deleted Scenes- Leonard Maltin Interviews Roger Corman- Theatrical Trailers- TV Spot- Radio Spot- Still GalleryScream Factory's steelbook reissue of "Humanoids from the Deep" features a gorgeous new 4K scan of the uncut version of the film which blows the original blu-ray away. This new edition is limited to only 5000 copies so get it while you can. Highly recommended!

HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP BLURAY from 88 FILMS released 29/3/21
Some films are so bad they are almost good. This is so bad it is almost quite good! It is exploitation at it's best/worst. Apparently director Barbara Peeters and star(!) Ann Turkel were less than pleased at the additions to the finished film, put in by Roger Corman - Sex - near naked and naked lovely girls, and rape, though not explicit, it is obvious that is what the "Humanoids" want - to inseminate humans! It will be viewed as unpleasant and pure exploitation, but is it a good film? I didn't think so. Very poor acting from everyone except perhaps Vic Morrow who probably could play his role in his sleep (and may well have done so here). Everyone else gives the impression of reading their lines from an autocue. Even Doug is not at his "Amicus" best. Poor Ann is just way out of her comfort zone. What's to like? If I can be forgiven for saying...the women are very sexy, and the Monsters are good. There is gore aplenty for those who like it, and the climax, whilst ridiculous, is actually very effective. I can't say I enjoyed the film a lot, but I have seen worse. The BLURAY quality is nothing special, but good, and there are extras - Kim Newman is in there! and there is a good booklet and poster. Good subtitles. Why 88 FILMS went to so much trouble is a bit beyond me, but this should sell well, and good on them for giving us a chance to see a long forgotten film. Make of that remark what you will.

Great film but a bit problematic…
I only really bought this release for Tim Murray’s liner notes as I already have the Scream Factory release. As for the movie I’m guessing If Bill Cosby was into genre movies this would be in his collection.
