Hello, You simply have to pull it off. It is easiest with an old card to get underneath it. Start at one side and pry it up lightly. You should be able to get under the piece and pull it up from there.

Will it stick right on knob without the domed cover?

The 3m tape will stick to any clean surface, but the dial shifter dress trim does come "domed".
