A must have in all classrooms
If you like Indiana Jones, you will love Harley James. A story taking place in the remote and exotic jungles of Guatemala. The story is a fun to read page turner that will keep your children/students looking for more mystery and adventure. As a teacher, the idea of having (fun) by using the stories settings and plots to teach about culture and the past to my students. All-in-all, I think all upper elementary and middle schools should have copies of Harley James for the above reasons.

Fun Adventure
This was such a fun middle grade adventure. Harley is a smart, really clever, and brave MC that is definitely a good role model for younger kids (minus the sneaking out of course 😂). I also like her friend Aly, who is the best type of friend! The adventure was fun and quick paced and learning about Mayan culture while reading was interesting too. The plot twist actually got me, I had no idea until just before it was revealed. Definitely a great book for young readers!

Full of twists and turns keeps you riveted wondering what’s around the next corner
It felt like you were there in the jungle with Harley James. You could almost smell the musky vegetation. Such a descriptive free flowing writing style. It was like being pulled down a fast moving river, never knowing what was around the next corner. Even though it was fiction it had many real elements of the Mayan culture woven into a thrilling adventure.

Flat characters and weak mystery
This story started out promising, but the flat characters were so one-dimensional it was hard to distinguish between them. I took off one star due to the flat characters. I was still open to the series, though, knowing that a new author often needs several books to fully round out their characters. I had to deduct another star, however, for the plot. In good mysteries there are several suspects, red herrings, and false leads. Throughout the entire story the protagonist focused on one suspect, only to find at the end an entirely different character, one that nary raised suspicion throughout the story, was revealed as the culprit. Not a well devised mystery! The kicker for me (minus one more BIG star) was the reveal at the end that the characters are all part of a secret organization - this time SMALL which stands for the Society of Mysterious Artifacts Legends & Lore. *YAWN Can we please have a middle grade adventure novel where the characters are not part of some silly kids-only secret spy organization using yet another acronym? This is SO overdone in middle grade today and I was so disappointed to find it copied yet again in this series. Most, including SMALL, make little sense as to why only kids are part of this top secret group saving the world. No sense at all. It's interesting how fast this author is kicking out these books. The first was published in May, the second in June, the third in July, the forth in August... Maybe just more of a focus on good writing and editing and less on self-publishing as fast a possible would make a difference. I had high hopes for this book when I started, but unfortunately was left feeling disappointed. I'm back to searching for a new middle grade adventure series.
