Street Action=YES; Rock & Roll Nights=NO
I grew up with BTO in the 1970s. These two albums from 1978 and 79 are their attempt at carrying on without Randy. The Street Action album came out titled BTO instead of Bachman-Turner Overdrive, apparently due to a licensing dispute between Randy and the others. The blonde gal on the cover was an instant hit with my 17yo self, I still can't tell what the heck she's doing. And the music has a heavy, catchy sound. Overall it's much heavier than their previous release, Freeways from 1976. I give a big nod to Street Action over Freeways, btw.Rock & Roll Nights didn't do it for me, the songs felt forced and the groove was nowhere near as heavy as Street Action. Rock & Roll Nights was the end of the line for the band, aside from a 1984 reunion album with Randy, Fred, and a bunch of newbies. The 1984 reunion album is actually very good and I like it better than Rock & Roll Nights, which along with Freeways are my least-favorite BTO albums. The 1984 album has a lot of politics involved, along the lines of Randy v. Robbie, and was the end of the line for the band. Robbie just couldn't get it through his thick head that Randy is EVERYTHING to this band.
