It is hand made by Knives Plus and comes on a block of wood 8" x 2 1/2" so there is plenty of room to do larger knives. Leather is glued to MDF and a high high chrome rouge or aluminum oxide is applied to the leather. The grit of this is 0.5 - 1.0 micron. The Knives Plus Strop comes preloaded with compound, making it virtually maintenance free. How to Use: All edges come off of your sharpening stones with a fuzzy uneven edge. The edge can be straightened out with a fine ceramic or steel, if you have the right touch. The problem is, with too much pressure, a hard ceramic or steel will roll that edge to one side or another and possibly break it off. To get that shaving sharp edge, it helps to have a soft polishing surface that "gives a little" as you straighten that fuzz out. The surface of our leather strop cushions your finishing strokes to prevent rolling your finished edge, as you might on a hard ceramic or steel. Always be sure to pull your knife edge backward four or five strokes on one side, and then on the other. Even the most exotic blade steels dull or can have their edge get misaligned somewhat with use, but stropping will minimize the number of times you'll have to actually sharpen with equipment that removes more blade material than is actually necessary. I previously used my EPA sharpener, an old style leather barber's strop and two strop blocks both loaded with different compounds to bring the edges of my knives back. This Aluminum Oxide block is the perfect go between of first sharpening on the EPA then the green & white compound strop blocks I use. Stropping removes less material thus extending blade life and leaves a nice polished finish.
