The Dyslexic Advantage (Revised and Updated): Unlocking the Hidden Potential of the Dyslexic Brain

Nothing is as simple as our society treats it.
I haven't finished the book but with what I've read so far it has earned 5 stars. Personally I have A.D.D. I was put on Ritalin and HATED it because I lost the best parts of my mental functions. Thom Hartmann has two books that discuss why it really isn't a "disorder" just a difference from the "norm," like being left-handed.This book does for dyslexia what Hartmann's books for A.D.D.My father struggled to read anything. I'm in my 70s so when he was a boy they didn't know the word dyslexia, at least in his rural school, so he got no help. When in college I dated an education major and finally realized he was dyslexic. I also read a book on systems thinking and realized my father who had only made it through the 6th grade naturally thought that way. My thought was he was lucky because that helped condensate for his handicap. This book looks at the correlations between the reading issues that get one diagnosed as dyslexic and shows that that problem is accompanied by mental strengths that are less common in non-dyslexics.As an aside the wiring in the brain that produces dyslexia is similar and apparently related to that which produces A.D.D.

Provide a positive outlook
My teenage son was recently diagnosed with dyslexia, which was quite the shock, but explained so much that had been misdiagnosed as executive dysfunction and slight ADHD. I ordered this book to help get a handle on how to support him, and the authors really frame the diagnosis in the best possible light by highlighting what this type of brain "wiring" excels at. Certainly, reading may always be a struggle, but that's not all there is to this diagnosis. It's helping him and us also focus on the positive side of it all, which is what will be so helpful as he decides what he wants to do post-high school.

Understanding various types of dyslexia
The content is very positive and looks at dyslexia as different ways of processing information. It explains the different ways and supports it with studies and individuals personal experiences. It shares inspiring stories of individuals who are proof that the way they process information can be a strength if understood and applied instead of looked at as a “disability”. It reinforces that everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. Even those not identified with a “disability” do something’s well and other things poorly. This is true for “dyslexics” as well. It encourages dyslexics dragon their many times untapped strengths and focus on them. It is positive about recognizing and allowing other tools or people with other strengths for help just as anyone else would need to.I could relate and understand myself and my children better! I first listed to this on my Audible account through my Amazon Prime. I found the contents so helpful I bought a physical copy so I can mark it and refer back when needed again for myself, my children, and others. I will use the contents to help other understand with backing of multiple individuals and studies to back the information, as well as my personal experience and that of those I know with these ways of processing information.
