New Lighting for New Tree
We recently replaced a 35' invasive tree in a raised tree well whose roots had broken through the concrete/painted stucco planter walls with a 15' tree that will eventually provide nice shade in a couple of years. But, it was a good time to replace the outdated "up light" that highlighted the old tree. I've used Hinkley lighting in other areas of the garden, so was attracted to this minimalist in-ground well light. Other than having to provide your own bulb (which is a bit cheap on Hinkley's part), the installation and connection to our low voltage system was really easy. The visible collar around the top of the light matches our other lighting, so it fits right in. The price was good, it arrived slightly ahead of the original promises shipping date, and the quality is what you'd expect from Hinkley. The effect of the light shining up through the new tree is really nice, and I'm really satisfied with the purchase.

Very well put together light
Top plate is cast brass, lens is tempered glass, the below ground portion is plastic. (Not explicitly called out here, but includes plastic burial housing also.)This is a very well put together light ; early days but I'm hopeful this is the one.

Too dim, relative to other lights with same bulb
This is a pricey light relative to others, so I expected more from it. The light is too dim and doesn't give adequate brightness I tried changing the bulb twice but it's still dim. Just next to this light I have a light bulb of similar lumens in a different fixture and it is much brighter.

LOVELY LIGHTS
We had these installed in our front flower bed to shine on our Japanese maple at night. They work very well and can be slanted when buried so that they shine up into the tree. Attractive and useful

Really Bad Product
Two years ago I spent about $1,000 buying and professionally installing six of these units (which turned out to be Chinese, not American) with transformer and separate line and GFI connection. Almost immediately they began failing, with three of the bulb sockets burning out; I dropped the bulb Wattage from the original 35 Watt to 20 Watt (the present rating, but not the original one) but they still burned out. The electrician replaced them with new sockets -- adding yet more cost -- which have been working for 2 years; I bought another six sockets from a local electrical supplier and as the three remaining sockets burned out I replaced them myself. I use only MR16 (20 Watt) bulbs which have to be replaced but only every six months or so. A few of the lenses cracked but after replacement they seem OK. I contacted the President of Hinckley and he had their chief engineer call me; he seemed surprised -- surely, I can't have been the only customer in the U.S. with this experience -- and promised a new uplight gratis for my troubles if I would send the burned out socket, but of course they never followed up. Now, after only 2 years of use, the paint on all of the covers has peeled off, leaving a kind of grey moldy looking color; I'm going to try wire brushing and spraying with heat-resistant black paint. Finally, although they obviously are supposed to be watertight, they still permit ants and water to get inside. The ants generate some kind of nesting material; it gets wet, and the bulbs short out; if I forget to put out ant poison granules every week, they start it all over again. It's hard to imagine how else these units can fail, but you never know. All in all, a really lousy experience with a very expensive product.
