Gardens of the World

Washed out
I agree with another review, just not very visually interesting. Nice pop of colour on the cover but the type of paper and printing makes what could be good photography look a bit pasty and dreary. Bought as a gift, but it didn’t feel all that special so returned.

Some interesting content, very pale presentation
This book is pretty much what I expected, and not entirely in a good way. There’s a thorough and methodical international travel approach to this, organised by the style of garden rather than geographically but still reminiscent of Monty Don’s TV show “Around The World in 80 Gardens” but in book form. A variety of gardens, some famous, some exotic, some not so much of either of those, get a respectful treatment with accompanying text that’s roughly equal parts art and history. The text isn’t heavy on the botanical content, preferring to tell bigger stories. However there’s something really quite flat about the presentation. I know it’s likely far more eco-friendly this way, but the lack of glossy paper and really bold printing colours makes a lot of the photos feel quite anaemic. These gardens are undoubtedly verdant and bold in real life, but judged solely by the pictures in the book, you might think them quite pale and washed out. Meadows and walkways from exotic parts of the world end up looking rather too similar to popular woodland walks of Southern England, and strangely unexciting.Furthermore, the modern coffee table book design means plenty of white space around both the photos and the text, and some quirky photo placement that means some photos unevenly span the spine of the book- sometimes to not much effect, sometimes to the detriment of the overall impression.A few double-page, single-photo, no-margin spreads are very welcome and show a different way that I feel this book could have been presented. A good garden is immersive, in a way that this book essentially isn’t.There’s plenty of content in here and some of the stories are quite interesting (others a bit dry), but the overall presentation feels rather pale, and not the luxuriant photo-packed around the world trip I was hoping for.
