Softer leads create darker, more visible marks but are more likely to get smudged accidentally (and are more difficult to erase if necessary). So you have to assess what you need to do to make the best choice. Note: There is not a significant difference in hardness between 2H or 3H. I seldom use anything harder than 2H for engineered drawing because I can create lines that are sufficIently dark for my prints or copies.
