The SHP 9500 sounds brighter and more forward for 2 reasons: the back is more open and the drivers are closer to your ears. The Sennheiser is more neutral sounding -some find it somewhat muffled unless you do the "mod" (removing a piece of tape inside) - I did. The opening on the Phillips is huge so fit maybe something to consider for one who wears a small size hat.The stock Sennheiser cable/plug size is for Home stereo. I mostly listen on an I-pod so I had to replace the stock cable - a $22 accessory. It was well worth it!!! The Phillips comes with a long but replaceable cable. As mentioned, I mostly use an ipod for portability and convenience so I replaced the cable with a much shorter 1.3 m monster cable that I picked up for $ 25. I played both headphones for 100 hours to allow them to "bloom". They have differing sound signatures and I can use them for long listening sessions. I love long solitary hikes and being "open type" they allow ambient noise to be heard - I just amp up the volume. Indoors, I can play them softly. By now, you can see that I am not a critical listener and use the headphones to enjoy music in any environment. I defer to the experts for the critical listening opinions.I use the headphones with a Fiio 7 portable amp. This is a winning combination. Both will sound good on an ipod without any boost but if you want presence, amp it up! We all have different ears...I have no qualms about using EQ either.Let me sum it up - If I catch a cold and sneezing results in some swelling if the ears, I will use the Phillips. Good Luck!! **Q: are these good to block out loud conversation and music say on a school bus?** A: This is polar opposite of blocking out. This is airy and loose. Absolutely wrong can for such purpose. I found this to be one of the best for Acoustics/Jazz with good recording that has staging. I have a pair of sr-60's and was wondering if these are any better...** A: These Philips SHP 9500 headphones sound twice as good as the Grado SR-60's. The Philips have a unbelievably good sound stage unlike any headphones I have ever heard. Grado headphones are somewhat harsh in my opinion. You won't find a better pair of headphones under $500.00 than the Philips SHP9500's. **Q: Hi, how is this in terms of bass?** A: The sound quality is very good in general. This means you can use this for calls especially if you get the version with the microphone. You don’t get that annoying feedback feeling closed-back headphones give you. However, this isn’t the only thing that’s great about them.They’re super easy to drive at just 32 ohms and 102 dB sensitivity, so they’ll have no problem playing straight out of an adapter for your phone or just your laptop.While they’re not super portable, it doesn’t matter since these aren’t meant for commuting as leaking noise in and out is part of how it sounds. They don’t fold at all and have no case but they do come with a cloth sleeve to protect them from dust as they ship.I feel that they sound alright right out the box but have a bit too much mid-high bass and not enough sub-bass due to their openness, but some EQ fixed it. They didn’t get distorted or messed up sounding from being EQed.The ear cups swivel and fit really well because they’re huge, probably because their drivers are 50mm as opposed to the average 40mm drivers you get in smaller over-ears. They have a metal band you can adjust and have markings to let you dial it in and get it the same way every time. The headband has some decent padding as well, and my ears don’t get gross and sweaty due to being open. I’ve never seen the material used for the ear pads before before but it feels alright.These headphones have another great feature which is a single, standard, detachable cable. It’s just a regular 3.5mm port so you don’t need to go to Philips to get a replacement cable and you can just use any you want. Another nice touch is that the 3.5mm port is on the left side which is the same as most laptop headphone jacks, so they align which makes the cable easier to manage.I got the model with the microphone. The rest is exactly the same but the microphone has some volume controls for the headphones and a mute switch for the microphone. The microphone pops a little bit but sounds FAR better than those stupid Bluetooth microphones. Buying the microphone still means you get the regular auxiliary cable in addition to the microphone cable. It’s really long and has a rubber coating and comes with the 6.3mm adapter which is another nice touch though I won’t be using it.
