excellent series!
honestly, the best contemporary American writer of today...character development, in depth story telling, vocabulary and descriptive writing excellent...all of this while honoring integrity , sharing history, understanding complex situations and to top it off, done with a sense of humor...you will love Walt and Henry and Vic and the entire crew...oh, yes, and Dog....

Loved the show, love the books more!
I was immediately addicted to the Longmire TV show, even tho the 1st season had some problems. It seems to be getting better and the characters (all of whom I liked from the get-go) have stayed strong. When I asked a friend if he was watching, he said no. He did tell me it was based on a book series he had read and had, in fact, recommended to me some time ago (prior to the television series). Having agreed with him previously on several other books/authors, I ordered the first four books (I hate reading a book, loving it and having to wait to receive the next one). I am very glad I did order the first four. They fast-paced and a quick and fun read..I generally do not love "westerns", but do live out here and have been involved in small towns, ranching and the fine but quirky folks involved in both for many, many years (indiginous species, actually). One of the reasons I like these stories is that they're right on target with the attitudes, patterns and people. You cannot love a book without caring for and about the characters and Johnson's spot on.I encourage anyone who enjoys the series to read the books and vice versa. Actually, I liked seeing before reading as the people in the TV show fit his descriptions to a tee (at least in my mind's eye). Who cares if there are varied story lines? The TV series is fun even if it has composite, additional or changed-up characters from the books. Honestly, there are some from the TV series I wish were in the books - and vice versa on that, as well.I heartily suggest you give them both a try!

Great mysteries set in a small town much like my favorite series, Mark Reps' Zeb Hanks.
I am a little late to the Longmire party, but I was talking to a friend of mine about my favorite author, Mark Reps who wrote the Zeb Hanks: Small Town Sheriff Big Time Trouble series, and she suggested the Longmire books would be similar. Needless to say I was excited about another author like Reps who combined Native American traditions with crime solving in the style of Tony Hillerman. These books did not disappoint. Walt Longmire is a multi-layered character much like my favorite sheriff, Zeb Hanks. The books will definitely hold your interest.

Good Series After Finishing Jack Reacher books
I got this set (1st 4 Longmire books) for my brother, after he finished all the Jack Reacher novels. He really liked them & now has another series "go to" when looking for a new (to him) book to read.

Books are absolutely, incredibly wonderful.
Once you start reading these novels, you will not be able to stop! Mr. Johnson has created something wonderful for all of us. I agree with all the folks who have voiced their opinions so eloquently. I am not that good with words, sorry to say. The A&E tv series " Longmire" is so great and wonderful . It makes my husband and me jump for joy, and we cannot wait for the new season to began. However, one of the reasons for the success of this show must be accredited to Mr. Robert Taylor. Where has this man been? Talk about handsome! This man has everything it takes to put other actors to shame. He truly brings Walt Longmire to life. I mean this man is real! Please, A&E, do not cancel this show, we need something like this to cheer us up and give us something to look forward to. Robert Taylor, thank you for the wonderful gift you have given us,and to Craig Johnson for giving us "Longmire" It is the best thing on TV......Ann Strouhal. Hungerford, Tx.

They are sufficiently different to the TV show that nothing is spoilt
Really enjoyed these 4 stories. They are sufficiently similar to the TV series that I can say it's a safe bet: if you like the TV show, you'll like these. They are sufficiently different to the TV show that nothing is spoilt... in fact there are some very entertaining surprises. I feel this is like an American version of the "Nordic Noir" type stories. I prefer these to the Jack Reacher stories that I've also been listening to - I feel the characters and stories have more depth and the stories build and keep you guessing right to the end. The descriptions really capture my imagination.

The Walt Longmire Mysteries
I particularly like the way Craig Johnson develops his characters and plot lines slowly thus giving the reader the same information that Walt and his team are dealing with which, I find, tends to draw me further into the story. All the main characters are well drawn with a fair bit of backstory and are, largely, likeable and the descriptions of Wyoming have made me want to go there! The books deal with modern themes: jealousy, murder, human trafficking but there is also a lot of humour, especially in the exchanges between Walt and Henry Standing Bear. If you enjoy a really well written book then I thoroughly recommend The Walt Longmire Mysteries.
