Another classic book for kids of all ages from David Smith! When I was an elementary school teacher, I used "If the World Were a Village" and "If America Were a Village" to supplement my social studies and math lessons throughout the year. Now that I'm an at-home parent, I've read "IF" aloud at home and loaned it to my child's 5th grade teacher when her class was studying planets. My 2nd grader was dumbfounded by the idea of how little fresh water there is in the world, and he was able to relate it to a class discussion at school about water conservation. The Water and Energy pages made me think about my own consumption, as we're experiencing a historic drought here in the Southwest.

A wonderful way of connecting mathematics to the real world for children and students to see the place and importance of math in 21st century lives. Very good illustrations and text. I especially like the pages on "Events of the last 3000 years" and the historical connections, both so very important for students to appreciate the human development of mathematics. Also the opportunity to get students to imagine and wonder as part of the development of understanding of mathematics, so very very important.Very student and teacher friendly with excellent notes at the back of the book and details of some of the web sites used in researching the book. Up to the excellent standard of Smith's other books.

Wonderful book that stretches a child's (and adult's) mind. Definitely one for Christmas/birthday list. This was bought for 8 & 11 year old sisters to share. Reviews promised something extrordinary and that is exactly what this book is. Read the expert reviews please. Otherwise I would just be repeating info.

I use this for conversation starters with my high school Math class. It is a great teacher tool.
