Penny Dreadful: The Complete Series [Blu-ray] [Region Free]

I am reviewing the set, if you're interested in ordering you already know what the series is like. The set is one of those book type cases with the flip discs inside (like the Blade Runner set). There are 9 discs with the episodes named on each disc along with special features. An exceptional series that, like “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” (the graphic novel/comic not so much the film which failed to live up to the potential of Alan Moore’s work), used public domain characters from various novels to create a rich gothic horror tapestry, “Penny Dreadful” lived up to its origins and name.Created by John Logan (“Gladiator”), the series focuses on Malcolm Murray a wealthy explorer search(ng for his daughter abducted by Dracula. With the assistance of Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) a woman who fights the powers of darkness in her life and Ethan Chandler (who’s real name is Ethan Lawrence Talbot in a tip of the hat to Universal’s classic horror film “The Wolfman”’) a gun fighter performing with a Wild West show brought on to help. Along the way they employee and are assisted by Victor Frankenstein who does own research on the side while assisting the trio.Featuring Timothy Dalton, Eva Green, Josh Harnett, Harry Treadaway, David Warner and many other well known British and American character actors, the writing is top notch for seasons 1 and 2 a bit weaker for season 3 where Logan had to wrap up,the series earlier than originally intended.The show looks marvelous with a nice detailed transfer. The 5.1 mix is especially active during the action sequences.Special features include “Ray Donovan” episodes 1 & 2 from the first season along with eight featurettes for season one. Season two two more for season two song with a round table with the actor who portrays Dorian Grey plus festurettes for season three on prosthetics and make up, character profiles “The Dead Zoo” (the museum in Ireland where they spot the scenes for the British Natural History Museum) and costuming.This is a terrific set my only complaint is I would have loved to see a season four to properly wrap things up (they are wrapped up but feel rushed) and rhe lack of commentary tracks by Logan or any of the directors/actors involved in the series.For the price, this,is the best way to get all three seasons. The rebooted “Penny Dreadful” set in the 1930’s sadly didn’t quite measure but and wasn’t allowed to flourish-it was cancelled after one season and is not included here.

... The "Penny Dreadful" series was a very impressive storyline. Itis an excellent platform for the acting skills of the entire ensemble, especially those of Eva Green, I'm glad to now have the chance to watch episodes whenever I'm are in the mood for "Penny Dreadful" ... just purchased it and loved the "pilot" ... this is my all time prefered genre ... historically wise lavingsly settings with great performances + soundtrack ... besides a very good price for a complete HD series .... loved Simon Russell Beale's role as the head of the British Museum ( one my favorite travel destinations abroad ) he is is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed talents in British theatre with his trademark :Rich, aristocratic voice

I heard a lot of good things about the series, but hesitated a long time to buy it, because I had no idea how you could join togehter the icons of victorian gothic literature without making it cheesy. All my concerns were blown away after watching the first episode. The set decoration, the costumes, the mood that every scene emanated and the stellar cast made Penny Draedful into one of the best shows I've ever seen (and I've seen them all). After the final season`s last episode I was devastated that there is no more to watch, no more adventures to gon on, no more dark secrets to unlock, but despite all this, the mesmerizing spell of the 3 seasons still lingers and I'm looking forward to rewatch it and submerge myself once more into the poetic and cruel world of Penny Dreadful.

I bought this awhile back and I'm just now getting to it. When I was flipping through the discs, I came to the last one and it was titled The Brady Bunch. At first, I thought it was a joke until I played and sadly to say it wasn't. And of all the disc it's the very last one for season 3!! I really don't think this kind of stuff should be happening with "brand new" dvds sets. So do better than I did and check your dvds while they are still returnable.

All star cast. Superbly well written. Wished they could have kept the series with these characters and actors going. Fully fleshed out reincarnation of fictional monsters set in 1890's Victorian era England. Werewolves, vampires, witches, Dr Frankenstein and his monster, tarot gypsies and gunslingers make up a wild ride for 3 seasons. A blistering pace, multiple layered story arcs, beautiful women and men, all make this a treasure trove of goodies. If you don't find it to your liking, its all you and not the show.

I love this show... I wish they would have found a way to keep it going... I didn't even know about it till the show had ended... For shows like this to do better maybe they need to advertise more just saying... The HD is very nice and the extras are good... Great value for such an awesome show...

Well made, well acted, great story line - very dark in places so if you are easily scared don't watch! nudity/ violence / but all relevant to the overall story

I buy a huge amount of box set dvds and very occasionally one surprises me by holding my attention beyond the opening season. Sadly, Penny Dreadful was not one of them. What starts off as an interesting plot with dark demons and a complex interwoven narrative, quickly descends into the abyss of utter boredom and unimaginative plot filler.Shortly after the arrival of Helen McCrory's character (which is badly played) and her band of talentless ferrets, the story ground to a halt. As is all too often the case, the scriptwriters in this tale clearly ran out of ideas early on in the series and couldn't muster the momentum nor the wherewithal to sustain a stimulating story. The occasional minute or two of interesting narrative drowned in isolation amongst each passing hour of viewing.The weakness of the script and poor performance of many of the actors betrayed what is otherwise a wonderfully observed setting where buildings and streets look fabulously period and gothic. Shame then, that the story fell off its own cart into the gutter.

Pretty good series all in all, loved the Victorana and the initial introduction to the character. Got bogged down a little in the middle and could have expanded Jekyll/Hyde character. Absolutely loved Ferdinand Lyle character. Maybe a fourth season would have rounded the series off and allowed me to give it FIVE stars

Den finsteren Mächten sei Dank! Endlich ist sie erschienen, die Blu-ray Gesamtbox der amerikanisch-britischen Horror-Serie “Penny Dreadful”, welche alle drei Staffeln enthält. Im schlichten, aber voluminösen HD Keep Case (knapp 5 cm in der Tiefe, 14 cm breit und 19 cm hoch), umhüllt von einem noch schlichteren, dünnen Pappschuber (ohne Relief-Druck etc.), der mit einem ablösbaren „FSK ab 16 freigegeben“ Aufkleber versehen ist, kommt sie daher. Das Titelbild, das die Kunststoff-Hülle ziert, ist mit einem aufgedruckten FSK-Logo versehen. Macht aber nichts, praktischerweise handelt es sich um ein Wende-Cover. Jede Blu-ray ist englisch beschriftet incl. der jeweilig beinhalteten Episoden (z. B.: The Complete First Season, Disc 1, „Night Work“, “Seance”). Im Keep Case kann man „blättern“. Leider bekommt nicht jede der 11 Discs (es sind 11 und nicht - wie in der Amazon-Produktbeschreibung erwähnt - 10 Discs) „Einzelhaft“, sprich, es ist nicht jede Blu-ray separat untergebracht: 3x wurden 2 Discs aufeinander gelegt, was mir persönlich wegen ev. Kratzer widerstrebt, aber das ist Ansichtssache. Well, we all have our curses, don’t we?Alle Penny Dreadful-Begeisterten, die bereits im Besitz der einzelnen Staffeln sind und sich auf Neues Material gefreut haben - bitte 1x ganz kurz die inneren Dämonen inne halten lassen - es gibt leider nichts Neues im viktorianischen England, nicht einmal das teuflisch ersehnte, abschließende „Making of“ nach diesem grandios dramatischen Finale. Wer die einzelnen Staffeln noch nicht besitzt, kann bei dieser Komplett-Box zugreifen. Wer auf neues Material hofft, wird enttäuscht. Die Extras entsprechen denen der Einzel-Boxen, weitere Gimmicks sind nicht enthalten. Absolute Kauf-Empfehlung für Freunde des Gothic Horror/Drama Genres, die der Poesie nicht ganz abgeneigt sind. „All sad people like poetry. Happy people like songs.”5 monströse Sterne.

So bad, I had to flip it on eBay.Otherwise respectable actors like Timothy Dalton and Rory Kinnear should be ashamed of themselves. Also most of the dialogue is mumbled and someone needs to tell Billie Piper that no-one can understand a word she's saying in that cod Irish accent.Beautifully filmed with wonderful sets, costumes, etc, but utterly lacking in any subtleties. Violent and offensive for the sake of it,Also, gratuitous animal cruelty, which is what seriously upset me.Totally unnecessary.I only give it 1 star because there isn't an option for none.
