Great set for its price
This is well worth the investment. As others have stated it covers 1st - 8th grade. Primary Math (1st, 2nd) covers basic addition, basic subtraction, basic multiplication, and basic division. Practical Math (3rd, 4th) takes these to the next level and includes fractions, decimals, metric, etc. Some things that are marked as 3rd grade are covered in 2nd grade (or even 1st) in some current curriculum (basic fractions, basic geometry, 2 or 3 digit addition and subtraction, etc.) Therefore, look at the lessons in the 3rd grade even if your child is at a younger grade.Practical Math is 5th and 6th grade, and it is way more in depth than I remember my math class being. It covers business math. Higher Math is 7th and 8th grade. From an initial look, it is very similair in structure to the Practical Math, but the problems are more difficult. The teacher's manual is also great. The test examples book look like they are for 4th grade or above. Adding together 5 numbers of 5 digits each are the easiest problems. The teacher's manual has test examples for younger grades. The only thing to be aware of is that many school districts are requiring standardized tests, and when I looked at the NJ ASK 5 (for my 5th grader) there were algebra problems on the test. Algebra is not touch in in this series until 9th grade, and the algebra book is not included in this set.My opinion on the whole thing is that school districts are pushing algebra to younger grades, so that the calculus and discrete math can be taught in high school instead of college. What that means in reality is that money math is taken out of the curriculum. Most of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade in this series has to do with the mathematics of money. So it is a choice that a parent is going to have to make. Do you want your child to take calculus in high school or do you want your child to spend that extra time learning the mathematics of money.

Content
Beyond pleased with this product. The price is wonderful for eight grades, and the content is exactly what we've been looking for. Common core has not touched this, thankfully. This series will hold our children to a higher standard than the filth being used by public schools. These books cover all the basics and more. Setting our children up for success rather than failure. Each book has an option for more advanced learning, depending on the child's needs and abilities.

Cannot recommend enough!!! A must for homeschoolers!!
I was reading David Barton's book about 4 centuries of education and was shocked at the difference between the 1800's and now. One of the math problems that elementary kids did in their heads was "there are 60 animals on the farm, horses, cows and sheep, there are 2 cows for every horse and 4 sheep for every cow, how many of each animal were there". The kids of today learn nothing like that!I puchased this set of books, which are exactly the same that was used in the 1800's and am so happy that I did. My home schooled daughter is learning more of the basics and will be stronger with them than her counterparts in school. One of the 2nd grade activities was to count down from 100 by 8's, 7's, etc, it's not easy for adults, and this was from 2nd grade!By the time you get to the 8th grade, it will knock your socks off, it teaches about the stock market, compound interest, dividends, etc. It is closer to today's college math, and a lot of people (including myself) didn't learn it in college.I am looking forward to learning with my daughter as she gets to the higher math. The price seems a little high, but if you figure that it is the only math books you need until high school, it is very little cost.

Arithmetic made plain!
This math is so beautifully organized. Step by step, it moves you along, building confidence with numbers in a simple and understandable way. I have paired this with Abeka seat work, and the outcome has been tremendous success! My son, who was advanced in number understanding at a young age started Right Starts Math. Right Starts Math caused confusion. He began to fall behind and disliked doing math. Of course, as soon as I realized the affect Right Starts Math was having, we dropped it. Once we started the Abeka and this tried and true Arithmetic, not only is he no longer behind, but has been advancing at great speeds. He moves faster through it than I do, and I couldn't be more pleased! I am very grateful for this series. Rays Arithmetic is a series all educators should use. Also, word problems will no longer be a problem. I just wish I had bought it sooner and not suffered through right starts math.

Rays Arithmetic Series
We are enjoying our Rays Arithmetic! I started with the first book in the second half of our "Kindergarten" year. The teachers guide is wonderful. I assign usually a lesson a week (sometimes for two weeks if we're not grasping something). Rays in nothing flashy and exciting with lots of manipulatives - we use things around the house and we make up our own games / songs / activities to go with the lessons. If you need to have everyday lessons planned out for you every day - or if you need your kids to be able to open the book and do work on their own this is not the book for you. If you have the time, like planning for and with your children you and like interacting and working with your kids during their lessons Rays is worth a try!

Strongly recommend!!!
Excellent source for any homeschool environment. Fills in the excessive gaps left by the modern curriculum, (common-core). Unlike, "common-core", the 19th century approach provides a full & complete foundation that is sorely lacking in the current curriculum... I'd highly recommend these books to any parent that truly cares for their childs' education...

I love these books! I'm so excited to use them with my little one when she's older.
I really liked how the set came with a parent guide and how they teach math in a way that makes sense for the child's developmental level.
