Can this be used with hot sugar to emboss a pattern?

This is a very thin plastic that is designed to put impressions in something that will form and hold solid. If hot it may melt and material will not hold in place

Can you use this in butter cream?

Allow your cake to set in the refrigerator overnight. The next day take the cake out and allow it to come to room temperature. Then it should work.

Are they reliable on any buttercream frosting cakes

I have used them on buttercream.. make sure you cake is really cold and crusted.. I have used a ruler to touch up some of the lines
