Sensational Kids: Hope and Help for Children with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)

My 9 year old son was diagnosed with adhd,odd and anxiety when he was 3. Recently he was treated by an OT clinic and was told he had spd. This book was right on with the symptoms and very informative. Even if you haven't been to any OT clinics, this book would likely help you understand more about what's going on with a child. I love how the book spelled out the process and research behind it all. That you for a wonderful book, it has changed my life.

Exceptional book that has helped me IMMENSELY with my daughter. It was recommended by her occupational therapist after she was diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder and I also highly recommend it. No 2 kids are identical and this book helps cover all the bases with the variances in child behavior with one struggling with this disorder. Very well written, and helped me when I felt like I was all alone trying to figure this thing out. I highly recommend this!!!!

I really appreciated this book! I like how it includes one chapter for a fictional child with each variation of SPD. I had read the Out of Sync child and looked at other books but felt they focused so much on the over-responsive version (bothered by tags, sounds, etc) that they weren't as useful for me and my little sensory seeker. This was the first time I read something and said "that's my kid!" That recognition along with some ideas for how to help him were really great.

I would highly recommend this book for parents or professionals working with children with sensory processing difficulties. As a parent within a kiddo with SPD, this book was educational and supportive in understand my role as mom. As a professional in the mental health field, I also found this book to provide great, applicable therapeutic details for supporting the child and family. Well worth the read!

This book was a life changer for me and my son! Reading the section on sensory seeking children was like reading a story of his life. Not only was it great to hear that we were not alone, it also gave me the push to seek him help through OT which has been so beneficial. I've asked several family and friends to read that section to better understand him. It's an easy read and brings so much understanding.

Boy, I needed this book! My 2 year old daughter was struggling and I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Someone suggested I take her to OT and the OT suggested this book. I definitely saw my daughter in this book. It does get technical in sections but I appreciated it and I don’t think it was over the top. I also appreciate that many examples in the book were extreme cases and I could extrapolate what that might look like in a less severe form. We live in a small town and it’s hard to find resources for her. A lot of people say they understand this disorder but that’s just simply not the case. After reading the book it helped me be a better advocate for my daughter and I felt like I had permission to take her as she is rather than conform to how someone else thought she should behave.

Have you ever heard of SPD? I hadn’t. Until someone I know told me about it. Do you know anyone who can’t stand Tags in their clothes? Maybe you’ve met someone who couldn’t stand (or tolerate) Loud Noises, (think- thunder, lightning, sirens, even music). I believe we ALL know someone with varying forms of SPD, or Sensory Processing Disorder. If we are adults, then we have somehow managed to navigate life, but our families may have thought or believed us to be ‘high maintenance’ or maybe just ‘weird’. Well, this is the book to give you details: please, it’s not a novel. This deals with Real Life. It may not be an ‘easy read’, but, I believe it is an ‘Essential Read’.

This book was exactly what I needed—quick, clear, and packed with useful information. It’s written in an easy-to-understand style and didn’t feel overwhelming or too dense. Great for anyone looking to learn something new without spending hours reading. Highly recommend for a fast, informative read!

Good information about SPD, by reading it u can diagnose about the child correctly

I was quite disappointed with this book. Much quality information on SPD is withheld. It hardly covered the 'postural disorder' type of SPD. The other types are rushed. If you need more information on intervention, buy the following book or pay for the training through Lucy Miller's business machine. I have found much more information on SPD thanks to the work of other OT's shared on internet and in other books (the Out of Sinc collection). The scientific update on SPD is very incomplete. This author is highly self-centered (as one can rapidly notice it throughout the reading of this book and on her websites). On the positive side, the daily examples of kids with different types of SPD vs the detailed daily life of a 'normal' kid was well written and provides an explicit portray of the differences between SPD children and non-SPD children, which can be helpful if that is what one is looking for.
