Classic and very moving road movie.
I was pretty obsessed with this film when it came out, and have watched it many times since. It’s a classic road movie, beautifully directed by the German Wim Wenders, and won many awards at independent festivals including best film at Cannes. A man called Travis (Harry Dean Stanton) emerges from the Texas desert after disappearing for four years and is reunited with his brother and wife who’ve been looking after Travis’s seven year old son Hunter in L.A. After some awkward bonding, Travis and Hunter set out on the road to find the estranged mother and wife (Nastassja Kinski) who now works in a Houston peep show booth. The booth has a one way screen so that the customer can’t be seen, and on his second visit Travis tells the story of their break-up through the connecting phone with a ten minute monologue of poetic beauty written by screenwriter, playwright, actor, and all round icon Sam Shepard, that is so moving you may want a very stiff drink afterwards. Kinski is also very moving in this scene; though she is basically just listening to a story she has to react to the words, and you see realization followed by pain and then tears. It is quite brilliant. Travis persuades his wife to be reunited with her son, but will he be able to join them? It is all very moving and also astonishing that Harry Dean Stanton, who had been well known for decades as a support actor, never won a single award for his once in a lifetime performance, probably because he didn’t have leading man looks and was a bit rough and raggedy. But those of us who care about such things, know that this is one of the greatest understated screen performances of modern times. Harry Dean Stanton died in 2017 aged 91 and most of the world didn’t even know who he was.

No subtitles
The picture quality of the DVD is fine, no problem with that. It does however state quite clearly on the box there are English subtitles. There are no subtitles at all on the discs. The SETUP only allows you to choose either surround sound or stereo. Nothing else.Probably won’t be a problem to most but I am hard of hearing and rely upon subtitles in order not to disturb my neighbours and also to better understand some American accents.

If you haven't seen this film yet, it's time to do so...
This is a classic. I saw it for the first time about 30 years ago, and I still remembered each detail. The pace of the film is slow, on purpose. But it's what's happening in the minds of each main characters that is so interesting. Splendid actors, by the way. The cinematography is also splendid. I highly recommend viewing this film in a home theatre with a projector and a huge screen. Not even a gigantic TV screen will do justice to this masterpiece. However, this film doesn't leave you in good mood. The story by itself is such a sad one, even though there are some positive aspects as well.Technically, this Blu-ray copy was just perfect. The different sounds (or silence) including the music by Ry Cooder are an essential part of the film, so make sure your AV amplifier and loudspeakers are ready to the challenge.

German 4K Restoration Edition Blu-Ray.
This review is for the 4K restoration edition of Paris Texas as pictured on this page. The film has never looked better, both image and sound are fantastic, so in many respects this could be a better purchase option than it's 'Criterion' counterpart. I should point out however that the film has the choice of English or German dialogue but there are no English subtitles and most of the extras are German language only (including the film-long director's commentary). This doesn't bother me too much, after all it's a German release, but it might be a decision changer for some prospective buyers.

Superior Blu from Axiom
This is specifically a review of the blu ray release from Axiom Films. The transfer presented here is the one of the best I have seen of a 1980's film released in the UK as yet. The colour saturation throughout is terrific while the 5.1 master soundtrack featuring Ry Cooder's magnificent score has never sounded better or clearer. On top of that, there are plenty of extras, and a very nice booklet. Axiom also deserve credit for a beautifully designed sleeve that fans of the film will be thrilled with - and all this in a slimline case as well, which I personally prefer. Altogether a very classy release - more please Axiom! Region B-locked.

Gorgeous.
I'd never seen this film before and bought it on impulse. Was very pleasantly surprised. It's a lovely, slow burning film. Strangely it clocks in at two hours and twenty minutes but seemed much shorter - I was so emotionally invested in what was going on throughout.Loved the performances, loved the photography; It's a very human, gorgeous gorgeous film!DVD is superb - great film-like appearance with grain, lovely reproduction of colour plus great sound and some worthwhile extras.Anyone reading btw - are their any recommendations for other Wim Wenders films? I'm becoming a bit of a fan!x

Masterpiece
I already have the earlier DVD release of this film but ordered this one on the off chance that, being a later release, and although the Product Details make no mention of them, it would have English subtitles for the hard of hearing. I'm glad to say, it does.I think everything has been said about the film. It is an absolute masterpiece and is one of my top five films of all time. Ry Cooder's music perfectly matches the atmosphere and slow pace of the film. This is a must see, must have film.

Astonishing character study
Nothing happened for so long as the enormously empty central character woke himself up, then went on a road trip to find the woman whom he had hurt to make amends. There is a powerful monologue where he tells his story to her. It is beautifully shot - sunbaked saturated colours. I cannot describe how powerful and beautiful this film is. I was deeply moved.

One of the really great movies.
I'd only ever seen this marvellous movie on old VHS tape. This BluRay transfer is splendid quality, and full-screen. The accompanying documentary about the genesis of the movie is fascinating.
