Looked for the right part and saw a lot of aftermarket stoppers that might work. Decided to stick with the OE part and I'm glad I did.The trick to install these is to use long nose pliers to hold the stop above the mounting hole, then let the pedal push it into place.I bought two and replaced both the stop lamp and the cruise control at the same time.

We have a 2005 Infiniti FX35 2WD. At first, we noticed cruise control was not working and did not want to pay a mechanic to fix at the time we noticed it (about a month ago). Then we just recently noticed that the brake lights were on and would not turn off. I had to disconnect the battery overnight so it would not drain. After some research, I learned that there are two of these items that are supposed to be attached to the brake pedal shaft. The purpose of these is to depress two different plunger switches. The switch on top tells the car to turn on the brake lights when it is not depressed and the switch below that tells the cruise control that the brake is on when it is not depressed. After 17 years, both of these original parts dry rotted and broke apart, leaving a hole in the brake pedal shaft large enough for the plunger switch to just go right through the hole and never get depressed. I first went to my local auto parts store and they carried a different version of this item and told me they were "universal" to all cars, but they were wrong. The ones I got at the auto parts store fit in the hole and depress the switch but do not have the lip at the end that keeps them from just falling out of the hole when you press the brake. This item fits in the hole and stays put. Hopefully it will last another 17 years!

Just like other many Nissan vehicles, the brake pedal has 2 plunger switches that work the brake lights, and cruise control. But on a 96 Pathfinder the space between the mounting plate for these rubber stoppers and the metal plate that activates them is so small, and the location so hard to get to even with the brake pedal pressed hard, i cannot even get a finger in there to position the stoppers to them press them in place.So i gave up on the idea and instead i cut a piece of aluminum to the size of the mounting plate, and bonded it onto the plate instead. Using a wood block in between the 2 plates i released the brake pedal and let the pressure set the bonding agent.Yes the old stoppers lasted 28 years, but this will last a century or more. LOLAnd it only cost a few cents for the aluminum offcut at the local metal supply house.

This is the part you need to replace on your brake pedal. Without it, your brake lights stay on because this depressed the button to turn off lights when you stop pushing down the brake peddle. Hard to get to, but not the parts fault. Start the vehicle, her something to does the brake peddle all the way. Put some sticky on a thin flat piece of metal (ruler worked for me), stick the flat side to the ruler, put it over the hole and press it in fully. Check with Ginger before releasing pedal. Should be good for another 20 years.

This is a piece of plastic smaller than a dime. Nissan wanted $25 for this, however I ordered this and it worked perfectly. Just a note to those that are ordering this for your brake lights staying in, there are two of these on the brake pedal. One is lower and obvious, the other is higher up and not so obvious.
