How often do you have to change the retainer ?

The retainer never needs replacing unless you crack or break it. It is a plastic cap that fits on top of 3M 6000 series cartridges or 5000 series respirators to hold 3M particulate filters 5N11 or 5P71. This allows you to replace your particulate filters without having to replace the entire cartridge.

When this is all combined with the adapter and filters will there be something for the hole? I've seen some pictures where there appears to be plug

The hole is filled by the n95 filter pad that fits tightly within the adapter. The pads can be used for days or even weeks between changes, although care must be taken that the outside surface of the pad is not touched during changes. The hole should only have the outside surface of the pad showing. Make sure that the writing side of the pad is toward the inside.
