There is a top and bottom but they are interchanable. **Q: Is that jar storage container a dark brown color to keep sunlight out when it is used to store cooked water bathed mason jars filled with food? THX** A: No it is not brown. They are white, (not clear) but you can see the jars thru them. **Q: can you use half of the container to stack jars on top of each other?** A: Yes. They are heavy, nonflexible plastic and the jars don't touch; they snap together tightly. I will be using them in a motor home this winter; they fit nicely in the underbed storage, and I can stack them two high. I'm told that a motor home traveling down the highway is akin to a constant 3.4 earthquake on the contents of the RV; now I won't have to hear my jars full of hard work and good food banging against each other, at risk for breaking, as we travel down the highway. I can't wait until the pint JarBoxes are available! This is definitely an awesome product...it's about time someone come up with something like this.
