A Place to Call Home: Timeless Southern Charm Hardcover – August 29, 2017

This book. Y'all! This instantly became one of my very favorite decorating books ever, both for its beautiful, layered, thoughtful, detailed, warm, welcoming intetiors and its advocacy of sweet Southern hospitality. I love the reverence for home, family, friends--relationships of every kind--present on every page and the alluring idea that decorating a home is more about creating a feeling of belonging than being "chic" or "stylish." The decor style showcased is definitely my favorite, with a "more is more" approach and a genuine affection for antiques and other treasured old objects. Plates on the walls, silver on the table, pattern all over the place, flowers and pretty art and luscious beds...I just could drink it all in (and did, in one long session of reading and studying). This was a Spring Break present to myself, and it carried me away, just as I hoped it would.

James Farmer has hit it out of the park again.I love his beautiful Southern style. After I received this book I called a friend of mine and told her she would enjoy it as well. She thanked me and she is also going to order copies for her children who are now married and setting up house.I have no complaints about this book. His style is impeccable, the photographs are rich, and the text interesting to read. I will say if you have several James Farmer books, the style gets to be a bit recognizable. But I guess one of the strong points of a good designer is being able to stamp his work, so if this is the style you like, and I do, you’re going to love every page.

A fantastic book. James Farmer's interiors are stunning! The rooms are very layered with rugs, art, collections, etc. yet with all the objects and detail in each room, they never feel cluttered. The houses seem warm and inviting, a place where you would certainly want to visit. Also, as someone that has had quite a bit of silver handed down to me, I love that he has incorporated it into the interiors as display pieces or to be actually used. (On the other hand, don't be put off from buying this if you don't own silver as there is just a ton of inspiration in this book.)I read the book cover to cover over several days, a chapter or two at a time, and have flipped back through the photos many times in addition to that. Each chapter starts with an introduction, sharing the inspiration for the home and his relationship to the owners. The captions for the photos provide lots of details - for some books captions are something just to skim over, but I really wanted to read them all in this book.James Farmer's book has quickly become a favorite for me!

This book has many wonderful photos of beautiful rooms created by a very positive and talented guy. I would love to meet him. Too bad about the editing, though, which is why I gave it four stars and not five. There are several oddly structured/grammatically-off sentences. For example, on page 146 under "A Timeless Kitchen," it says,"In a kitchen in particularly, I like to create vignettes..."

This is a great example of Southern lifestyle and design. I loved how various styles and lifestyles were shared in this book.

The book itself is beautiful and it’s pages are filled with information and pictures to assist you in creating spaces you love!

This is such a beautiful book. I love the story telling with the beautiful photos. The decorating is absolutely my cup of tea. Timeless, elegant, & just beautiful. I have this on my coffee table & have gathered so many ideas I will use in my home. This type of decorating will never be just a trend. Welcoming & warm just like a good hug from those special ladies in our past.

This book is filled with lovely photos and adequate descriptions.

Haven't had much time to ingulge in it yet. But, it is a beautiful book. Definitely one I will browse through often.
