The Many Deaths of the Black Company (Chronicles of The Black Company)

An extraordinary take on dark fantasy.
I think the Black Company series is one of not the only series where I could fall in love with the main characters despite them being the gray in a Gray vs. Black Morality story. Despite their struggles and the lost of their comrades, the Black Company continues to strive against all odds and against heinous enemies to become the champions in a dark and bleak existence they deserve to be while enjoying brief moments of respite.Memories are an immortality of a sort, and this series will live forever in my memories!

Amazing Series - Great Ending
This is the last omnibus of the Black Company Saga. The most obvious statement to be made here is that you should absolutely read the prior books in the series before getting to this one. The ending was fantastic and the writing is superb. While character depth is built through 9 novels the consistent switching of main character figures allows for a fresh novel every time.I'd also like to point out that Glen Cook's writing is not dumbed down. One major problem I have when attempting to read fantasy fiction is that it appears to be written for 12-14 year old kids. As such the vocabulary is extremely limited and the writing is often too obvious, with no nuance. Well I can safely say that Glenn Cook's writing was more then adequate at keeping me feeling like I was reading the writing of intelligent men and women (the books are all written by the annalists of the black company - meaning they are written as if they were a sort of journal).

Before you join Blackwater, read this
This final collection of the Black Company wraps the story up with a great bit of world building and real character development for Croaker. It was worth the read.Mr. Cook does best with his male characters, as even Lady ends up one note. He does an exceptional job of capturing the melancholy stoicism of the mercenary, especially those in a career, rather than just adventuring for a season. The current, 20 year global war on terror has provided us ample real life examples, and they track with this book.I also appreciate Mr. Cook kept to the true vagaries of war. Not every death was beautiful or even earned. That's how war truly works. Soldiers live, and wonder why.

Truly exceptional writing
This is the 3rd time reading this series. It is one of those you can reread and find somthing new each time and still has the same effect on the imagination everytime, no matter the age. Glen Cook will.always be one of my favorite writers, honestly, right beside Tolkien.

The single best written series of books
The black company series may be the single best written series of books I have ever read. The written by the same man through the entire series the tone of each book changes as the person who was supposedly chronicling the black company changes. From the first book to the last this is a thoroughly engaging read that makes one Wonder if Glenn cook is in touch with the same thing that Stephen King was in touch with when he wrote The Dark Tower series. I recommend this series of books every chance I get to anyone who is interested. It is worth the time to read the series. I've reread this series now at least five or six times and will do so again.

Worthy, epic finale
One of the best fantasy series I've read. Cook brings his epic saga to a conclusion that ties the many threads and open questions together without ever seeming forced. I was sad to reach the end and could easily have spent more time with the motley crew of the Black Company.

The Conclusion of a Military Fantasy Noir Epic
"Darkness wars with darkness as the hard-bitten men of the Black Company take their pay and do what they must. They bury their doubts with their dead. The Black Company, dirty deeds done dirt cheap." So begins the Chronicles of the Black Company, perhaps the first book ever published in a genre that is now called Dark Fantasy. The Many Deaths of the Black Company is an omnibus containing reprints of the second half of the Glittering Stone saga, a four book series continuing the tale of the Black Company, which was first published between 1996 and 2000. If you have not read the original Black Company series, the characters and plot may prove overwhelming. I recommend you start with the first novel, Chronicles of the Black Company . You will not be disappointed."Water Sleeps" and "Soldiers Live" are the books contained within The Many Deaths of the Black Company. They conclude a series which has been nearly two decades in the making. While initially published to little fanfair, The Black Company is now viewed as a revolutionizing force within Fantasy literature. His works are known for their mature and realistic setting, epic scope, military focus, morbid humor and gritty prose. The original editions of these two books are now extremely rare and regularly sell for 30+ dollars each. This is their first republication in the modern era, get them while you can. Rumors abound that Glen Cook plans a return for the Black Company but these books have yet to materialize. Until then: Here ends the annals of The Black Company.

The best fantasy saga
This saga is just awesome. I like it more than Game of Thrones, and it's the best fantasy saga I've read so far.

A bittersweet finale
They don't call it "The Many Deaths of the Black Company" for nothing. Glen Cook's final two books (so far) provide a bittersweet ending to many of our favourite characters' stories. He pulls no punches, nor does he ever get too sentimental. Like his characters, he's experienced and seen too much to get poetic now, and that's exactly how this reader likes it.
