It is a resin. They are lovely.

Q: How wide/tall is the square at the bottom? I want to get a customized plate with my cats name to attach but need to know measurments first.

3" high base is square approx.1 1/2" to 2" but you should wait to get the item and make sure.

Q: Does it have an opening on the bottom so it can be used as an urn?

No there is no opening, I am very sorry for your loss.
