Seemed very sturdy, but I don't suggest this open-front model.
I bought this for someone who is quite large (6'5" and about 500lbs). As others have noted, this is a LARGE toilet seat and it's quite heavy. Thankfully the lid is a lighter plastic than the actual seat or it would be totally unwieldy. I would definitely suggest that the manufacturer put some additional photos of their products in their listing... primarily an image or 2 of the seat installed on a regular toilet. I read the dimensions and knew it was going to be considerably larger than a normal seat and I have no problems with that. But I think it would help customers to get a visual of how it'll look in their space so they can make an informed decision. Although in and of itself there's absolutely nothing wrong with it (in fact, the curves in the seat are actually quite attractive), the sheer size of it on top of a standard toilet isn't terribly attractive in the conventional sense. If they don't add photos here,I would very highly suggest doing an image search online BEFORE ordering the product so you understand how it's going to look! It's pretty easy to install. My only complaint in putting it on the toilet is the heavy stainless steel hinges that you put through the back to hold the seat and the cover together and then down through the holes in the base of the toilet don't stay in place as you're trying to lower the seat onto the toilet. As I got one side into the hole in the toilet base, the seat was at an angle and the other hinge slipped out and fell into the toilet with a clang so loud I thought for sure it had chipped the porcelain. Thankfully it didn't!The person I got it for said it was very comfortable and, especially since he's so tall, he absolutely loves that it adds another 2 inches to the toilet height. I've never actually purchased an open-front seat, but for some reason thought that design might be more comfortable for him. Unfortunately I had to uninstall it and return it to Amazon because after putting it on, I realized that with the seat height being about 2 inches tall and it being the open-front style, that means there's quite a sizable gap both in width AND height in the front where (sorry to be gross, but there's no delicate way to phrase this), if the user had diarrhea or something, there's a very good chance they're gonna have a mess to clean up. It's not necessarily a design flaw on the part of the manufacturer (and therefore I'm not knocking off any stars) because I'm sure there's a good reason why one would prefer the open front design over the full round, so they're just fulfilling that need. But once I saw it in place, I just foresaw disaster having such a huge opening in the front of a toilet seat.Aside from that, it seemed very sturdy and high-quality. Even though I returned that model, I immediately came on Amazon to order the full round version and I'm sure the recipient will be very happy with it.

Comfy, functional, and easy to install.
I don’t have mobility issues, but I am obese. I purchased the Big John for comfort. As a total klutz, I found it easy to install. The metal hinges are adjustable to exactly fit your toilet, which after reading some of these reviews, is a feature that I believe some people haven’t understood. It’s very comfy, and because it gives me so much room to sit, it’s also very hygienic. I prefer the open front because that design means I have even more room. I would imagine that men might appreciate the extra room that the open design affords when they sit on the seat. My old apartment toilet is low, so the extra height this seat provides is much appreciated. Aesthetically, it looks like a plain, oversized toilet seat. That doesn’t bother me at all, but might annoy anyone into more fashionable toilet seats and interior design. I’ve only been living with it for a few days, but can already tell that it’s sturdily built. I love it!

Great product, great company
I think I've written three reviews in my life. But as the spouse of a big, disabled guy, I have to spread the word about this throne. If you're looking for solutions to challenges in this area, buy this thing. Right now. It took me five minutes to install, with no tools, DH loves it, and I don't fall into it, as I feared I might. The design is perfect for the issues bigger people can have, including mobility. It does look a bit silly (it IS big), but it's beyond worth it. My only regret is not buying it sooner. AND - if there's a problem, the company will solve it ASAP. My first Big John came without the hardware. The response was immediate and courteous. This is a product that will immediately improve the life of not just the person who needed it, but anyone who cares for them.

COULD NOT BE ANY WORSE
THIS TOILET SEAT HAS A VERY STRANGE DESIGN- IT IS A RAISED SEAT BUT IT IS SO HIGH YOU BARELY TOUCH THE FLOOR WITH YOUR FEET IF YOU ARE NORMAL SIZE WOMAN. ON TOP IN THE OPENING OF THE SEAT THE EDGES GO UP, IN A WAY YOUR BUT GOES BACK DOWN AND YOU GET SEATED IN A VERY WEIRD POSITION THAT MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO REACH YOUR BUTT.THIS IS A TORTURE NOT A SOLUTION TO ANYTHING, AND EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY

Perfect fit but... (no pun intended)
I love this seat. It is HUGE. I am a big guy width wise and it supports my weight without a problem. With the normal toilet seat, I was putting a lot of pressure on my rear. Once I installed this seat, no more pressure, literally what a relief! There is one Con I've noticed. The seat has about a 2 inch opening when the lid is closed and therefore the smell does come out in to the room. I never had this problem with the other seat. I'm going to increase the time my fan is on (an automated one) and I hope this will solve the problem. CORRECTION: The smell was NOT coming from the opening in the seat. It was from something NON-related. My new CON is that I do have to clean it MORE since I sit higher than the original seat. No big deal on that too me :)If you're tired of feeling like you're sitting too low when you go, this will definitely solve the problem and it's very easy to install, so says my girlfriend.
