The House at Lobster Cove (Benna Books)

Delicious New England reading
The author has created a book that from its cover to every word on the page is simply delicious. This book is the book that proves the value of hard copy books (even though this is a gorgeous paperback). Written like a novel, it is the life of a wealthy New England loner and the house he came to build. Torn down in later years, this author not only can write but researched the house and rebuilt it on Swan's Island, Maine. It formerly stood at Manchester-By-the-Sea, Massachusetts (the town in the movie). I was particularly impressed as an historian how this writer had so captured each era with images that just bring it to life.

An instant classic
Exquisitely written, painstakingly researched, and a complete joy to read -- I haven't encountered a novel this beautifully constructed, or this moving, in many years. Goodrich provides a fascinating look at nineteenth- and early-twentieth century New England (especially the Byzantine world of the Boston Brahmin class) through the lens of fully realized, compelling characters -- all of whom are based on historical figures. Despite its focus on American life of over a century ago, the book also covers many themes that feel uncannily contemporary, including the vicissitudes of the economy, debates over religious tolerance, and issues of class. The central love story between the protagonist, Nixon Black, and his partner, Charles Pitman, is unlike any I've ever read before; their ability to create a fulfilling life together was nothing short of miraculous, given the place and time in which they lived. Following the course of their lives, and the unforgettable characters in their circle, you'll feel as though you genuinely know them all. When I'd finished the book, I did something I rarely do... I started it over again.

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BOOK!
Like the author, Jane Goodrich, I have long been fascinated by Kragsyde. Her story of the imagined life of George Nixon Black is beautifully written and a compelling read. I could not put the book down for two days! If you have any interest in her and her husband's reconstruction of Kragsyde on Swan Island, Maine, or the little known life of G. N. Black, you will love this book. The book itself is beautifully designed and printed by Benna Books, an imprint of Applewood Books in Boston. The book arrived in pristine condition. Carefully packaged. Quickly shipped.

What a life...
Engrossing story of the life of a little known man who did so much, for so many- Manchester , MA,, Boston and Ellsworth, ME and the showpiece, Kragsyde are all key players in the tale, one that is spun beautifully and keeps you turning pages way, amazed at the people, the structures, the story. the author's absorption and devotion to the work is evident as she takes her time, plots the tale, and lovingly restores, in our mind's eye, the structure and the people of this late nineteenth century, early twentieth century time and era....

An Historical Novel of a Real Place and Real People
This is an engrossing read, the kind you don't want to end! It was sort of a slow start for me, but once I got interested, I couldnt put it down. The true story of a gay couple and the house they loved. I bought it originally for my son's partner, but it is such a great story, anyone would enjoy it if they are open-minded. There are no graphic details. All the characters are real people and places

Blown Away!
I was intrigued by the synopsis. I love historic homes, New England, interesting people so I decided to give it a go. Boy am I glad I did. It is one of the BEST books I've read in years. As another reviewer stated, It's a classic. Jane Goodrich with this work has distinguished herself as a first rate author.

Great book - read the story about the house in Yankee and had to get the book. I'm about 1/4 of the way through the book and enjoying it. Love the letterpress cover and intricate binding. I'm a graphic designer, and my son and I have put together a print shop full of antique presses, type, etc., so I appreciate when someone takes the time to do something different.Excellent!

the social mores and a look at love. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it ...
An incredibly carefully woven story, THE HOUSE AT LOBSTER COVE provides you an inside look at Victorian Boston, the ins and outs, the social mores and a look at love. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it for anyone who understands how society can be at its cruellest when so "correct." The house as a backdrop provides such a wonderful picture of the happiness which took place there!
