I'll show you what horror means... growls the hideous Mr. Hyde (Fredric March) as the helpless, terrified Ivy (Miriam Hopkins) cowers on her bed. And now you'll see too, as you watch this fully restored 1932 version of Robert Louis Stevenson's spine-chilling masterpiece. With the inclusion of 17 minutes of previously censored material, this is the definitive Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Director Rouben Mamoulian's choice of young, handsome Fredric March (known then as a comic actor) to play the lead raised studio hackles.

DVD fine, packaging could be more secure
Both these films are old enough that a potential buyer can find plenty of reviews elsewhere. The DVD is English (thus PAL), but it's put out by Warner (despite the fact that the '32 version was Paramount and the '41 was MGM; how do these guys divvy up these old properties?). As to shipping, it was packed in a thin plastic bubble mailer and the case was shattered, but the DVD was completely intact. Always keep a supply of DVD cases on hand! I paid for standard shipping, got it the next day.

Best version available
This is the best version of the film and this Blu-ray has two commentaries that complement each other. My old DVD had one so this disc is a must own.

Definitive
In my opinion, the definitive version of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde. Yes it's old and yes the effects, which were groundbreaking at the time, will seem dated for younger viewers and yes (GASP) it's in black and white...BUT I still stick with my opening comment. The definitive filmed version. If you haven't seen this film, pack your prejudices away and give it a look. You won't be disappointed.

1931 Frederic March Version
Warner Archive Collection finally releases on Blu-ray the original 1931 version of author Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", which had starred Frederic March in his superb, dual Academy Award winning Best Actor performance as both Jeykll and Hyde, matched in a surprising yet memorable performance by Miriam Hopkins as the beautiful but doomed Ivy, who loves Jekyll despite the rigid society obstacles, but hates Hyde, who of course pursues and torments her mercilessly, a truly tragic star-crossed, seemingly cursed "romance".Looking absolutely superb in a 4k uncensored restoration, a massive upgrade over the double-sided, double feature (with the 1941 MGM remake) DVD from WB in 2004, porting over the Bugs Bunny cartoon "Hyde and Hare" and the Greg Mank commentary, and now including a new commentary track with genre historians Steve Haberman and Constantine Nasr, plus a radio adaptation. Excellent film directed by Rouben Mamoulian holds up wonderfully after over 90 years and is a must have.
