Chief Truths of the Faith: A Course in Religion - Book I (A Course in Religion, 1)

Tradition has binding authority
For the reviewer who complained that the book is "not biblical," the Catholic religion existed before there was a canonized Bible. The Catholic Church chose what written material would be contained in the Bible. Peter and Paul taught people before there was a Bible, and those people, (such as Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Justin Martyr, and Irenaeus of Lyons) taught by the apostles, handed down the traditions and teachings of the Catholic Church. Tradition has authority and binding force as to what we are to believe as Catholics. We are bound to God through our religion, and not bound to a book. Even the Bible says not everything is written in it. John 21:25. Father Laux's books are excellent for anyone who really wants to learn the true Catholic religion.

Not Biblical
As I continue to investigate the Roman Catholic faith I find myself enjoying the devotional content but also coming across serious theological problems. In Chapter 3 this author has the audacity to write: "Since it is the Church that teaches us what we must believe in order to be saved, it is not necessary for the Catholic to read the Scriptures to search out the truth for himself". I can't imagine there are believers out there who would be ok with such a statement. This goes against clear Bible teaching. I will not be adding this book to my library. If any Catholics happen to read this review please understand: it is necessary and vitally important that you read God's Holy Word!

Wonderfull Book
I would have given this book 5 stars if it weren't for the fact that this book was originally written in the 1920s. With that said the book has great information without over analyzing the back grounds of the beliefs, but it does give adequate facts. It is easy to read and very much to the point. The only issue with it being written so long ago is that certain things have changed in the Church sense it was written.

We are learning so much with this book. It ties together what we've learned in earlier grades. My daughter and I love reading and discussing it together.

Excellent resource
Excellent book and highly recommended for parents who want to educate their children in the Catholic Faith and a source for those who home-school. Our Catholic Faith is beautiful and this is just one example.

this book did not disappoint, explaining things clearly
Having already seen Rev Laux's 'Introduction to the Bible', this book did not disappoint, explaining things clearly. A great overview of the Catholic Faith.
